GuestI don’t know if this topic has been done before, but I’m really disappointed in FairMormon’s review of StayLDS. There are some comments and posts on here there I don’t always I agree with, so I can see somewhat where FairMormon is coming from. But much of what they said is just what I believe to be wrong. FairMormon teaches that this website is only meant to help Mormons be lukewarm Mormons. What a crock! I can’t speak for everyone, but there are many Mormons, including me, on this website that aren’t lukewarm Mormons. I just don’t get it. Even Bill Reel from this site, who is not a lukewarm Mormon, has talked to them. What are they thinking? 😡 December 11, 2014 at 1:09 pm #292839Anonymous
GuestI’d have to see the review in order to determine whether it is fair (pun ) or not. My gut reaction without seeing anything would be to say that we (humans) tend to be harsh critics of things that we don’t fully understand. It’s hard to understand someone unless you’ve truly walked two miles in their shoes.
Demons and religious leaders alike didn’t appear to have a very favorable opinion of Jesus. People at StayLDS may appear apostate to the orthodox. Why don’t you just leave the church already! People at StayLDS may come across as not being genuine to the “anti” crowd. Why don’t you just leave the church already! Not to say that people at StayLDS are more comparable to Jesus than others, just pointing out that people from both sides can misunderstand.
It sounds like the real issue they have is with “cafeteria” Mormons. That might follow a more “glass half empty” mindset. It’s not about what people are doing, it’s about what people are not doing. The glass half full mindset might look more favorably on the efforts that people are making. It’s the answer to the question… if you didn’t believe in many of the the church’s truth claims how much of your time, talents, and means would you continue to give to help build the lord’s kingdom?
All things StayLDS aside, lukewarm might be extremely hot when juxtaposed with the frigid, subzero place a faith crisis may have dumped someone off at. I’d rather give the lukewarm fire more fuel and see how hot it can get over time. It certainly beats dousing the fire because it’s only lukewarm at the time. Love, don’t judge.

GuestI think that review is from quite a while ago. I’m not too bothered if FAIR thinks we aren’t orthodox enough. Not everyone is the same. I respect what they do, and some of it is useful, but it’s not in competition with what we do here. I see it as a slightly different audience. I’m not sure they differentiate our audiences. GuestI get it. I wouldn’t recommend this site for a lot of my friends. It is what it is, and it never will be recommended by most people who are helped the most by a place like FairMormon.

GuestAlso, some of us talked with some of the FAIR people when the review was written. They were good, fairly productive discussions. I hope they feel a bit differently now than when that review was written – shortly after this site launched and when we weren’t known very well. It was really easy back then to lump us together with the NOM sites, even if our approach, tone, content and mission were and still are very different. It’s also worth mentioning that FAIR took a bit of a beating here on a regular basis back then. It’s not surprising that they would read some of that and fire back. Like most things, “It’s not that simple.”

GuestI have the impression that Bill Reel works with FAIR. I wonder if he would be willing to informally work with FAIR to provide a more fair (pardon the pun) review of this site? December 11, 2014 at 5:20 pm #292844Anonymous
GuestThe only link I find with the same title is dated 2009. A lot has happened. Even Fair isn’t the same as it was then. I liken our differences to siblings. We maybe more alike than we know. Quote:Esta página foi modificada pela última vez à (s) 09h57min de 23 de agosto de 2009.

GuestWhen I first came to staylds I had the same opinion as FAIR….that this site encourages lukewarmness and in my view, mediocrity in church service. And I guess it does for some people. But now, I think calling me lukewarm is a good adjective, and it doesn’t bother me. For some being lukewarm is the best u can hope for — the alternative is being stone cold.
For others like me it was a gateway to greater happiness than I had experienced in the church. Meaning, it led to greater happiness. And a new schema for what it means to serve god….including a wider audience than just people somehow touched by a relationship with the church. To an orthodox member that means lukewarm. To me, becoming lukewarm in the church means I can still serve in the church on my own terms, while being on fire for service in non-church contexts.
For me, the lukewarm moniker from Fair is also another form of judgmentalism where people look at only a fragment of my life, without considering the totality of my life, and the totality of my service.

GuestContrary to what many have been taught there is nothing wrong with being casual about your religion December 12, 2014 at 1:01 am #292847Anonymous
Guest“Lukewarm” means avoiding the extemities. Quote:“Hot and the Cold are both so intense – put them together it just makes sense.”

GuestThanks for the comments. I had gotten a little worked up after seeing this. I should have known that was an old review on FairMormon. 🙂 December 12, 2014 at 2:05 pm #292849Anonymous
