Here is the other side of the coin — following the model of happy relationships Willard Harley Junior purveys. The church also has needs. Do you meet these needs adequately so the relationship is a two-may exercise in needs-meeting? What do you think the church needs from you to be happy with you and your relationship with it?
Here is another poll. Feel free to add more needs and assess how well you meet those needs.
I picked all of the items in the list except for the large family concept. I don’t think the church pushes for that anymore given the proclamation. Plus, the church has grown enough that although growth is important, the church is widespread and internal growth is not as critical as it was a long time ago when the saints were persecuted and driven into isolation. I think the church still wants it, but doesn’t need it. What does the church WANT from me or NEED from me? I assumed “want”, but I think it NEEDS me to be enough of a thorn on some items to make people think and make changes, but not enough of a pain in the side that they have me surgically removed. Nothing, individually. It will take what I will give, just like every other organization of which I am a part – and many of which I am not a part. It needs enough from the collective membership to continue to exist and, ideally, grow.

I agree with Ray! This is where the concept of the marriage metaphore breaks down for me. I have certain needs that I need from my church and if I am exclusive and faithful that I might have a hard time getting from any other source. The church OTOH has needs that it needs fulfilled generally and regionally and even locally – but it has many members from which to have these needs fulfilled. I know of no calling that would go unfilled should a certain individual not choose to accept.
I voted for: Willingness to accept callings in the church: I’ve found that some leaders get really antsy when people don’t have a calling.
Provide faith-promoting lessons and talks [that avoid controversy]: I’m always called on to give talks and teach lessons. Always. “That avoid controversy” has never been a tag-line but I suppose it’s assumed.
Your time: This more than anything. I can’t tell you how many lessons I’ve sat in on where Matthew 6:31-33 is used to get people to prioritize their lives to make service in the church #1.
