Ok so I’m getting ready to move and I came across my temple bag with all the assorted clothing. Now I don’t think I’ll ever return to the temple. My question is how do I get rid of it? Just throw it out? That’s what I’ve done with the garments I’ve found. Thanks

Sure. You can just throw them out.

I don’t know how far you are from a temple, but if it were me I would probably bring the dress and other pieces there for someone else. They’d get some use and not float around so disconnected from their place.

(Disposing of garments is a different thing, I’d say,)

You could always give them to someone in your ward or as Ann suggested, donate them to the temple.

I don’t know if or when I will return to the temple. But I’m keeping my clothing and a couple pair of garments. If for some reason I pass away, I know it’s likely my family/ward will probably prepare my body…and I don’t want them to have any difficulties. Someone would go through my things and find the clothing. Not that at this point I have a preference, but if I’m gone then I won’t have much say.

If you’re a by the handbook type:

21.1.42 Temple Clothing and Garments wrote:

To dispose of worn-out temple garments, members should cut out and destroy the marks. Members then cut up the remaining fabric so it cannot be identified as a garment. Once the marks are removed, the fabric is not considered sacred.

To dispose of worn-out temple ceremonial clothing, members should destroy the clothing by cutting it up so the original use cannot be recognized.

Members may give garments and temple clothing that are in good condition to other worthy endowed members. The bishop can identify those who might need such clothing. Under no circumstances should members give garments or temple ceremonial clothing to Deseret Industries, bishops’ storehouses, or charities.

I do like the idea of donating it to someone else in need.

Nibbler, can you create a YouTube video to show us how to do this properly? Everything is on the Internet…oh wait…that includes the garments and temple clothes…hmmm…why are we cutting them up? :problem:

I stopped worrying about that a while back. If some one wants to pick into my garbage and pull out my yellowed G’s full of holes – I have more of a problem with “why in the hell are you doing that?” than the fact that they see my garments.

Logically if non members see me dress in the gym locker room they are going to see just about all they can with those.

Maybe some are worried that non-Mormons will want to take our old garments out of the trash and wear them.

I agree, LH. Worrying about the “what if” scenarios would make me feel as weird as a weirdo who would rummage. Like I said before…why are we cutting these up? I can’t think of a good reason…so I don’t worry about it. I don’t believe they are magical cloth. They symbolize some important things to me. Others who don’t appreciate the symbolism can do with them what they want.

I think it is a really good question from Tatania, because we are told different things within the church, so it totally makes it a legitimate question. I’m just sharing my approach that I don’t see any purpose cutting it up serves. That’s me. To me, having it specifically in the handbook raises more questions for me that it helps…so I just go with my view on it.

Thanks for the input guys, I’ve felt no guilt over just throwing away my old garments (I always hated cutting them up) but the temple clothes were a different matter. I do live in Mormon corridor so there are plenty of temples nearby where I could donate the clothing but finding the time is a different matter. I think I may end up just throwing them away. It’s weird though.

Donation is best IMHO. Then at least it saves someone money.

You don’t have to go to the temple to donate them. That would be a two hour trip for me, a trip I wouldn’t make were I in your circumstances. Do you have a home teacher, visiting teacher, or someone else who is active that you sometimes see or associate with? You could give them a short explanation that you don;t need them any more, give the clothes to them and let them take them to the bishop or whoever.
