I decided to give this one a go to in honor of SunbeltRed’s Favorite Paintings thread. I put some serious effort into finding a painting to post but I confess, when I go to museums DW studies the paintings while I study the architecture of the museum itself. I guess you could say that I fixate on the ornate box and not so much on the pearl inside. ;) Doesn’t matter, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all.

😳 back on subject I’ll start off with Bill Monroe’s My Last Days On Earth.

For whatever reason that one cuts right to my center. I didn’t know the name of the song when I first heard it but once I found out I found the title appropriate. I realize it sounds like hokum, but the song calls up bittersweet feelings for me.

I love music! During college I went to at least one or two concerts a month and still dabble on the guitar now and again.

And I have weird music tastes, though I think the internet (especially Spotify) has made it possible for a lot more Niche music to become more mainstreamed or at least reach a wider audience.

A couple of my favorites though that I can listen to any time:

Sweet Carolina by Ryan Adams (though I like 75-80% of everything Ryan Adams has released and he is prolific in the amount of material he has).

    Country Roads by John Denver

I’ve never heard of Ryan Adams (Bryan Adams, yes). Thanks for sharing.

    I’m also a guitar dabbler.

    Nibbler – Nice choice.

I love lots of music. Three years ago I began taking piano lessons. I am not musically talented, but I am learning and I love it.

Presently my favorite song is “The Water is Wide” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFgCGQVqiko” class=”bbcode_url”>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFgCGQVqiko

Yesterday though the words to Abide with Me, Tis Eventide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R62p3IYwSxo” class=”bbcode_url”>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R62p3IYwSxo

Presently I am learning to play Rachmaninoff “Theme of Paginini”

I like both “Abide with Me”s.

The other one was featured on Parks & Rec. Ron Swanson Goes to Scotland (song starts at 0:39 but I figured I’d include the rest for entertainment value).

Sometimes I like the instrumentals because I have the tendency to supply the words myself, which makes the words be in my inner voice.

I don’t know where to start, so here’s some flute and piano from today’s walk down Youtube Memory Lane:

    Claude Bolling – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N6ulsmp8gY

And this is a tune I hope goes into the next hymnal:

    Allison Krauss – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ub56L5AYyEM

(I love the audience singing along, easier to hear them as the song goes on…..)

    Editing to add:

    Eva Cassidy’s Wonderful World – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPAGH0AT-os&list=PLONLmE9k7n1P1aTq40uNB7e_bx06zxLKO&index=6

Better stop now before I really date myself by adding some of the Smothers Brothers and Tom Lehrer I just watched.

Sure… but you might want to refrain from posting some of their their song titles. :P

I like stuff in nearly every genre… though I’m still reaching to develop an appreciation of new country. I was an ABCer for the longest time (anything but country) but I’m coming around on some stuff. I’ve got nothing against people that really like country music, my FC cured me of that. ;)

I knew I was getting old when I started liking country… 😆 We used to have an agricultural show near me in the 80s, and they used to sell really crappy country music on tape, stuff you’d never have heard of and probably wouldn’t want to hear it again. Anyway, it put me off a bit.

However, you couldn’t do worse than this with a country song though…

This is a bit morbid, but I would like my family to play this song at my funeral as what I believe to be one of the most beautiful songs on earth. With pictures of my life in a slide show. It’s written by Pat Metheny, and don’t worry about the language, or the slow start. I feel emotion almost every time I listen to it. It’s called Dream of the Return.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVxhyeaG87w” class=”bbcode_url”>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVxhyeaG87w

I’m also a jazz musician. 6 years ago, at about the time of my faith crisis, I decided to shake things up a bit, and launched a part-time business as the business motor (impressario) of a suite of music groups. After a few splutters and starts, I’ve performed about 110 times alongside musicians with jazz and music performance degrees, most of it in the last 4 years, without any formal jazz training. Something that has brought me great joy as I’ve devoted less time to church service and more time to my healthy passions. It’s allowed me to fulfil dreams I thought I would only have time to do in retirement — if I even made it there.

I like Claude Bolling as someone mentioned above, but listen to a lot of jazz, and lately Herb Albert’s music, which appears to have been forgotten.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC38-qqiVgg” class=”bbcode_url”>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC38-qqiVgg

And lately, I’ve started trying to learn to appreciate Latin music…music I can play in the various groups I started:

If you are interested, I will send you a link to my music production venture so you can see some of the things we’ve done over the last 5-6 years….if not, no biggy. This is a local venture, so it’s not a sales pitch..

As you can see, music is very important to me. I am now ideating on a CD called Alternating Heads that takes the chord progressions to standard jazz tunes, but uses my own melodies (melodies are called heads, among jazz musicians)…another idea to put on my bucket list.

One thing — not a fan of live music involving singers. I have backed them up before, and I find they tend to see instrumental musicians as disposable. I prefer instrumental music, or music that involves groups with multi-part harmony….where no one singer dominates the musical landscape.

Here is one example of religious music I love — a hymn you might recognize — another one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard in the last 30 years.

Wow – this was a great song! You should listen to the one at the end of my thread on favorite music. It has the same feel and vocal instrumentation.

Here is is again..it’s a medley of This is my Father’s World and one other hymn you might recognize, with the true beauty, in my view, starting halfway through the song.

Danny Boy – played on the bagpipes, especially. Vocal Point did I a version where the final verse is haunting and powerful. (It starts at 3:08 of the official video on YouTube. I can’t link it from my phone.)

I love vocal instrumentation. Pentagon is and Home Free are amazing.
