I think there’s some really good discussion going on in the tread but I have a few thoughts: 1) metalrain created the thread but has the thread been taken over by taletotell? I’m not terribly concerned because metalrain made the following comment on page 9:

I can get behind that comment. metalrain is still active in the discussion so perhaps I’m making a mountain out of a molehill.
I just want to make sure metalrain gets the attention they asked for.
2) The thread has grown, no real issues with that. The only concern is that the number of things covered in the thread is growing. The wonderful insights that people have on various topics might become buried. In the future it might be harder for people to search for those insights, certainly harder than it would be in threads that are more focused.
That said, I don’t want to toss a wet blanket on the back and forth. Jumping in with a suggestion to create threads on specific topics might only shut the conversation down. People may agree with the suggestion but they might not be motivated to go off and create another topic… the conversation ends prematurely.
I’m learning. Thoughts?
Excellent questions. I am letting it go for now, since I want the type of discussion it includes to be there for lurkers and because the author doesn’t seem to mind.
However, I am concerned about taletotell, especially since he just admitted he is into debating. That is the impression I have gotten all along, so I just pushed back a bit more directly than normal to see how he would react.
I think we close a thread when it gets to the point of non-productivity or argument only or emotional conflict or spirals so far from the original intent / need that we ought to be having the discussion in a different thread with a new title that makes it easier to find by lurkers, particularly.
I’d love to have others chime in on this, especially since we have newbies who haven’t had a chance to contribute to a discussion like this previously.
Slight correction it was taletotell, not metalrain that admitted that he liked to debate. Thanks. Typo on my part. I changed it. I think the thread is going well and metalrain is still discussing his questions throughout. I’m not afraid of long threads as long as they don’t get circular. Once we see metalrain drop off and it is taken over by others, I think we suggest they start their own threads so metalrain can keep getting help wants on his topics.

I like to hear other mods’ perspectives, so I think it was good you raised the question here, nibbler.
I’ve had concerns about TTT from the git-go, although I do perceive sincerity. I also share the concern that the thread may become circular and become to broad. TTT does seem to be resisting the idea that all is not black and white, but his admission about debating puts that in a different perspective. I’m glad you chimed in there Ray, and I will try to do my part in stopping it from becoming circular. Really, there’s only so many ways to say (and so many quotes about) not everything is black and white, inspired, etc. My hope is that TTT does not see this as simply a place to debate, but to share ideas. I guess time will tell. After following it for the day, and contributing, I posted a bit of a send off on it. It’s becoming a thread jack. Now homosexuality is on tap. Idea exchanges help, but I think we have now passed that point. I don’t know about locking, but maybe restating the OP, then encouraging any other topics to begin as new threads. I don’t want to end conversations or TTT but we have a full forum with tons of material and plenty of other spaces then just this thread. My 2 cents.
I sent metalrain a PM. Nothing major. I just wanted to acknowledge that the thread had grown and that I didn’t want him to feel like he had been crowded out of his own thread. Nibbler – Great idea. I hope someday to come up with good ideas like that, too. 🙂 Good feedback everyone. Based on that…I went ahead and just put an Admin Note on the thread so metalrain can be the next person to keep that thread going, as the originator of the thread. I just read the note, great job. Did anyone hear from metalrain yet? I know he is a busy student, but just wanted to make sure we didn’t overwhelm his need. I really love this team.
Thanks Heber13. He’s already responded in the thread but the PM I sent is still in my outbox. He may not know where the PM stuff is, it can be easy to miss. Either way he got the message, thanks.
