This was a great article with some thought-provoking comments on the atonement and the crucifixion. Since we are sort of doing that Mormon thing where 8-10 hours of listening to old people talk replaces celebrating the most important event in the history of the world, I thought some of you might be jonesing for some actual Easter appreciation: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/thegodarticle/2015/03/god-did-not-kill-jesus-on-the-cross-for-our-sins/

Interesting piece with a different take on the reason for Christ’s sacrifice. I’m interested in the reference to “old people” talking replacing celebration of “the most important event in the history of the world”. There won’t be the sacrament at the conference center but there will be music, i.e. the mo-tabs and other groups, video displays hopefully equal to what your local mega non denominational church will whip up, and talks (homilies to your upscale protestant and catholic churches or just plain sermons to the ordinary groups) that likely will mention Easter, Jesus, atonement, etc. in at least equal proportion. Old is a relative term though and I expect that anyone in their early forties will likely see anyone fifty-five plus as “old”. The key may just be to wait for the printed version. That way seeing an old person with an old voice won’t distract from what ever he or she has to say. Conference is tough, no doubt about it.

I don’t want anything fancy, and I’m sure there will be lots of references to Easter and probably a couple too many very nicely produced videos. I wouldn’t matter to me if conference speakers were from every decade and country, and half of them were women… because I don’t want to sit on my couch on Easter morning. I want to sing Easter hymns, hear Easter scriptures and talks, take the sacrament, give my friends a hug and wish them a Happy Easter. I want to actively participate. Our ward had a regular fast Sunday last week with no Easter hymns.

What would be the harm in moving General Conference by a week when it falls on Easter? I really don’t understand.

    Vent over.

    Easter will still be beautiful.

You make a good point, Ann. I do recall conference was moved once because of a sporting event (Olympics) and it was because KSL is an NBC affiliate and had to show the event. You’re right, if it can be moved for that reason it seems like moving it for a major holiday could happen also. That, however, still doesn’t ensure wards would actually do much with Easter. Perhaps they’d have to be very specific and say something like “The Council of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve has decided to move General Conference so that it Doesn’t coincide with Easter Sunday. Doing so allows our local wards and branches to hold Sunday services which honor the Resurrected Lord with hymns and talks befitting the holiday.”

On the other hand, I think they don’t mind conference being on Easter.

When Conference is on Easter, we actually get more references to Easter than when GC isn’t on Easter, in some wards. If you think about it, even when we celebrate Easter, that means we have 2-3 relatively short talks about it, usually. The issue is 4 hours of conference on Easter Sunday, with non-Easter messages mixed in, which makes it seem like we don’t celebrate it – and wards where we don’t do much, if anything, when GC is not on Easter.

Thanks GB! I will add that to my helpful list of pointers for avoiding old people. 😆

Almost 40 years ago, after a simmering FC, I dropped in on a neighboring ward for Easter Sunday, hoping for uplifting message celebrating Christ. Three hours later, not a single reference to Christ or the atonement, except for the obligatory prayers. The song selections even missed the mark. That’s when I went AWOL for 17 years. Now my wife and I solve the problem by going to an Episcopalian Easter celebration. They do a good job of noting the reason for the season, that helps me be a bit more tolerant of Mormon business-as-usual bland Easter and Christmas.
