GuestI have to say, I am excited. My wife and I have not attended Church regularly in a few months now. For me, it’s lack of interest, although my daughter goes on her own, regularly. For my wife, it’s lack of engagement with our local Ward, and the fact that in our bootleg, non-geographical Ward, she didn’t feel completely accepted after being released from an assignment. But I have noticed my wife watching the Spoken Word each Sunday. And today, noticed she was observing a Sacrament meeting on BYU TV. I found it interesting and sat with her through it. Not the same level of boredom as I experience at church. First, it is only 30 minutes long and starts after the announcements and Sacrament passing are over. BYU TV recorded very good sacrament meetings with prepared speakers, often a quality musical selection. Often there are only two speakers, or sometimes, 3 if there is a well-prepared youth speaker. 30 minutes, that’s it.
Also interesting was that the services are from decades ago — but they are not “dated” in content, says my wife. The styles of dress were 80’s, but the message was universal — timeless — about service, love and other timeless principles. I actually enjoyed it — plus there was no pressure from our local Ward or community as there is on TV.
So, if you are bored, and not attending, consider going to BYU TV on your Roku/Chromcast/Internet TV, and then select the Live Streaming option. Ours started at 11:00 am Eastern Standard time before the Spoken Word. I see it as a good alternative to going to church for people who are not able, on a break, or wanting to slowly reconnect with church again.

There is also a Messiah Series that focuses on ancient scripture and the life of the Savior, but it is hosted by BYU professors. For me, it’s like an alternative to Sunday School. I watched it last week. It’s like attending Education week. It came on after the sacrament meeting my wife and I “attended” today.
I recommend it very highly.

GuestIndeed, SD, I rarely missed a week of Music and the Spoken Word during my years of not going to church. I watched it live on BYUTV, but I did not always watch the worship service because there are only so many of them and they get repetitive (and I don’t like a few of the topics). I continue the tradition of watching each week’s episode of Music and the Spoken Word using the BYUTV “DVR” function each Sunday. I love the simple straightforward messages (today’s was understanding our neighbor’s by getting to know their stories, something we talk about here from time to time). There is also an official Mormon Tabernacle Choir Youtube channel that has back episodes (it takes a few weeks for new ones to appear there). The worship service videos are also available on BYUTV.org (use the search function) as are the programs discussing the books of scripture. August 24, 2015 at 3:11 pm #303205Anonymous
GuestSounds nice. It also touches on one of my theories, that SM would be a little easier on the little ones (and the big ones too) if it were 20 minutes shorter. All other variables the same I wonder how a 45 to 50 minute SM would go over. Concise, direct, to the point, not padded out to fill the allotted time, etc. -
