GuestMy son worked very closely with his mission president, David L. Cook, while in the office. (He’s training for the remainder of his mission, another 7 weeks from now, but spent about 6 months in the office). President Cook had been president of the Palmyra stake before being called as an Area Authority (while I was inactive) and then a mission president. He has had a fair amount of interaction with top leadership, especially apostles, and was often called upon to drive and house them when visiting the Palmyra/Rochester area. His homage to Elder Scott listed several experiences he had with him, and he had similar experiences with Elder Perry. He did interact with Elder Packer but to a lesser extent judging by his writing. President Cook is a lawyer, a democrat, and a former county legislator. He is most definitely a social moderate and supports gay marriage. He believes there will be a South American called as an apostle, but he doesn’t hazard a guess as to which. So here’s the most recent insight my son gave me. There are only a couple apostles pushing the “anti-gay” agenda, and one of them recently passed (the one he had less interaction with). While I think I would like President Cook to be a GA, he thinks he probably won’t be because one of the apostles he knew better told him there were a couple in the quorum who questioned his liberal views and thought he should not be called as an AA (which happened anyway, of course). Just a bit more evidence that the body at the top is not a group of yes men that totally agree on all things (and I felt like sharing today).

GuestThanks, DJ. I do think there is more of this in the church than we think at times. But still…it is interesting there are comments about a liberal minded person not being good to be a AA. I mean…why? Just because the majority of existing leaders seem to push that. Not sure. But, it is what it is. September 30, 2015 at 5:26 pm #304698Anonymous
GuestIt goes back to what I keep saying. People don’t view politics through a gospel lens. They view the gospel through their political lens. Johnathan Haidt also describes this in The Righteous Mind. To a very conservative person, being liberal politically looks immoral. The problem is that with the exception of authoritarian regimes in Asia, nearly all global politics is to the left of the US. Given how red Utah is politically, that creates a problem. Guestwell said, HG. I have also heard people say it is immoral, which is confusing. -
