GuestI just think this is interesting. We’ve known our stake conference is coming Halloween weekend since last year by this time. Our normal schedule is Saturday afternoon/evening leadership and adult sessions with a dish to pass dinner in between, (some of us skip the dinner and go out with our spouses) and a Sunday morning session. Our SP announced this time we’re having earlier afternoon sessions (starting at 1 back-to-back) and no dinner so we can be home in time to have family time for Halloween activities in the evening. I was actually looking forward to not buying candy

GuestSo pleased to see a SP acknowledge the cultural and social importance of Halloween. Put a gold star by his name!

GuestJust attend the meetings in your Halloween costume so you are ready to go right home and hand out candy. October 16, 2015 at 8:26 pm #305007Anonymous

I think I’ll go as a high councilor with a thirty minute talk prepared – that’s pretty scary!

GuestThat’s pretty cool – good for you guys. Attendance at the Saturday night session of stake conference is pretty miserable for our stake and I’m pretty sure my SP would do anything possible to increase it. On a related note, our ward has a very strong Halloween party tradition and it’s very well attended by members and non-members alike. Recently someone in Ward Council asked why we have a Halloween party and they got shut down pretty hard. My comment was that a Halloween party shows that Mormons are almost normal.

So did it get shut down right as soon as you made your comment?October 18, 2015 at 3:10 am #305010Anonymous

GuestOur ward has a party, too. Families decorate doors of classrooms and pass out candy trick-or-treat style and there are other activities. It’s usually not on Halloween because of neighborhood trick-or-treat, so the move doesn’t affect us in that way. And our kids are grown (the baby is a senior in high school). Nevertheless, I agree, trick-or-treat gives us a sense of normalcy and we will now carve our jack-o-lanterns, pass out our candy, and all the kids from school will say “Hi Mr. Jedi” and all that stuff. Someone tried to shut our Halloween party down several years ago too, questioning whether we should be celebrating a non-Christian holiday that celebrates evil. We got the same result and the tradition has continued. That same individual did manage to shut down the New year’s Eve party though, I don’t recall why, but we didn’t go to that anyway.

GuestIf you want to see an trunk-or-threat brawl of a blog, go read the post at BCC and read the pages of comments. Some are tongue in cheek (as was the title), but they are funny.http://bycommonconsent.com/2014/10/22/if-you-like-trunk-or-treats-you-probably-dont-have-a-testimony/ ” class=”bbcode_url”> http://bycommonconsent.com/2014/10/22/if-you-like-trunk-or-treats-you-probably-dont-have-a-testimony/ October 18, 2015 at 7:21 pm #305013Anonymous

I love party crasher’s, as if Heavenly Father doesn’t like celebrations.

I heard he only likes Christmas parties as long as there is no Santa Claus (another thing that has been brought up in the past, even as recently as last year).

GuestWe quite literally only have two activities a year. Trunk-or-treat and Christmas. We really like that 10 month stretch from January to the end of October. It’s a nice healthy break from having to commune with the saints. DarkJedi wrote:Someone tried to shut our Halloween party down several years ago too,
questioning whether we should be celebrating a non-Christian holiday that celebrates evil. I love it when people focus on the negative history of something to the point where it clouds their vision of what that something is in the present day.
   Seriously though, I always got a kick out of the “it’s devil worship” crowd. To me it’s kids getting amped over getting candy and the one time a year where I learn that the houses in my neighborhood aren’t vacant. I have neighbors. Who knew? From the article LookingHard posted:
Quote:Now itโs basically a block party for every candy-seeking 9 year old within a 78-mile radius.
That’s funny. In my ward it’s an excuse for the priests to still go trick-or-treating with no shame and no costume as they visit each trunk a half dozen or more times.
Kid: Trunk-or-Treat!!!
Me: I heard you received your mission call. So… where are you going?

This is actually something that some other churches get excited about that is not generally on our radar. One of the church’s where we participate showed a video to the youth about the history of Halloween. Afterwards I had a good natured discussion with the teacher. I said that if we were to take as close of a look at the history of Easter or Christmas then we might not celebrate them either.
