GuestSo often we talk of God watching over all — even the sparrow. I found the below statistics disheartening. Quote:Ornithologists are scientists who study birds. Their research has shown that, on the average, less than one third of the baby wild birds that hatch will survive their first year and that the majority are lost during their first few weeks of life. For example, studies have found that only 36.7% of Colorado Lark Buntings survive their first 20 days, and only 14-29% of Maryland catbirds or Pennsylvania Hooded Warblers make it through their first eight weeks.
“Remember The Sparrow” I was told. Now that sounds like more like a threat than a comfort.

GuestThis is a concept I struggle with AP. Last F&TM there were several “God knows you personally and is intimately involved with the details of your life” testimonies. I cringe at them because I simply don’t see it and don’t believe it. I suppose in one sense science proves it. November 11, 2015 at 5:18 pm #305990Anonymous
GuestThe exercise in my mind is agreeing that God watches over all His children and His creations (like the sparrow) AND seeing the world is what it is, not a polyanna version of the world. It doesnt help me to chase impossible dreams of what I want God to do.
If we can “remember the Sparrow”, remember the 63%. I’m sure God does. And the world turns.
I am happier focusing on positives. But, not ignoring reality.
God seems to be OK with the percentages. Or He would have fixed that by now.
I believe He knows my heart…I don’t believe that he will keep it beating for me.

GuestQuite profound AP. If I can bring it down to something more personal and trite (and bordering on sacrilege), the passage in Luke that talks about the sparrow also talks about the hairs on our head being counted. I am starting to wonder if God was getting tired of counting all the hairs so he decided to let a bunch of mine just fall out on the top of my head (as AP can attest to). GuestThanks! I was all prepared for a “tender mercy” – type moment, but, instead – POW! November 12, 2015 at 5:02 pm #305993Anonymous

I suppose that your profile pic must be a little outdated – back to the more full bodied hair look of your youth.

GuestGod caring to count and God letting it all fall out are not opposites. November 12, 2015 at 5:52 pm #305995Anonymous

That kind of deep thinking just makes me pull my hair out! Wait – maybe I am the reason I am losing hair and not God! Thanks Heber for giving me a mirror. But when I look at that mirror I can see the thinning on the top of my head even more!!!!

Guesthaha. Well…in full disclosure…I’m a member of the “Bald men with beards” club myself. Have you done the beard thing? …talk about threadjacks…from sparrows to beards…

AP – since we’re throwing science and logic into the discussion, the thing that makes me wonder is God’s omniscience vs. the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Not even God knows both the position and momentum of a subatomic particle – He can only tell us probabilities.
This never bothered me – and still doesn’t – because it doesn’t seem particularly important spiritually. But my physics and chemistry classes were probably the first times I started to wonder if what I learned at church might not be 100% literal.

But we have better certainty of the position X, as the momentum P decreases. So as long as no one moves or changes in any way, we know where everything is. It is just as momentum increases that the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle becomes applicable. The faster the momentum, the less certain we are of position X.
The world is changing at a very quick pace right now. It has entire societies and religions wondering where their position is. They will remain uncertain until the momentum slows down.

GuestAP – I believe this research was conducted on my front porch this summer. I spent most of the summer counting the sparrows and starlings that finished their life span on my porch. I even said little prayers over them as I picked them up and wrapped them in tissue. November 13, 2015 at 10:15 pm #306000Anonymous
GuestI don’t like that hair part. Damn Rogain!

GuestThe glory and the pain are found in the paradoxes. Figuring out how to make sense of opposition in all things is incredibly liberating.
