This is third-hand, and I don’t feel comfortable sharing it in the public section yet, but a friend in my stake who is well-connected told me Sunday that Elder Renlund told a Stake President recently that he doesn’t’ like Church books, generally, but that the one book he would recommend to all members is the Givenses’ “Crucible of Doubt”.

I liked his selection already, but I loved hearing that.

I hope it’s true, Ray. My RM son has been reading it since his return – and has commented that his MP said the same things. His MP does tell them he has read it and likes the Givenses.

According to another source, Steve Young uses it to teach his weekly Sunday School class with, and Elder Christofferson highly recommends it as required reading.

It just seems like it takes someone like the GIvens’ to frame these ideas in a non-threatening way so that smart and very devout members can put their guards down and embrace it without having to go against prior faith and belief, but broaden their belief because it is safe to do so without hurting their status.

I think it is how the ship turns slowly, until it is pretty common thinking and then people in the church will act as if it always was taught that way, nothing has changed, God is the same yesterday, today and always, the church is true and we have all truth…and on we go.

Besides the crazy zealots in the church, I do think most members are intelligent and thinkers and compassionate and reasonable. I have had this feeling for years as I discuss things in private (where it is safe to do so) with devout members, and they frame things more reasonably then they do in public when they are championing a cause or defending the church in front of others. That’s been my experience.

Truth prevails. Even in the church.
