GuestNot that I am missing it, but I have realized that my ward RS doesn’t say the Relief Society Theme. Not the “Charity Never Faileth” but the long one. We still stand and do the YW one when they join us for opening exercises but that’s it. Anyone else still say the RS one? or is this just like food storage and gone with the wind?

Thanks. I asked this because this represents, to me, the church in a nutshell. In my ward when the theme came out, they passed out bookmarks and we always said it, just like the YW, but over time, for reasons I don’t know we don’t. Yet no ward that I have ever attended has just “dropped” the YW theme. Why? Is one theme more valuable than the other?
This little weirdism happens a lot. A program or project is big stuff, it is desperately pushed to be administrated, then suddenly like women laying hands on heads for blessings, it just disappears. No one knows why. Yet other stuff is vital.
I have no answers to my questions, more curiosity than anything.
Anyone else’s additional thoughts?

GuestMy guess is that it varies from ward to ward and reciting the RS theme may have caused distress among some adult investigators so some wards decided to drop it. December 16, 2015 at 3:34 am #306965Anonymous
GuestA quick and dirty search gave me this iffy blog post and comments about it: http://www.ldswomenofgod.com/relief-society-theme/ I seem to remember some talk about “why?” Why do women stand and recite a theme ala the YW, but neither the boys nor men do? I wish the things we do along these lines were equal. (For instance, I don’t like going to the Women’s meeting with 8 year-old girls when 8 year-old boys don’t go to Priesthood session.)
I like recitation and memorization, but I get that a lot of people are weirded out by it. I think it’s really powerful when it’s something
beautiful, worthy of recitation. I remember listening to a BYU devotional where the speaker asked the audience to recite the Lord’s Prayer. It was really something. December 16, 2015 at 3:43 am #306966Anonymous
GuestThe boys memorize and recite the Scout Law/Oath. It’s not the same thing but it is similar. I had originally thought that the YW theme was created to give the girls something similar. In my youth I attended a church that closed every Sunday get together by singing the lord’s prayer. I liked that.

GuestSome RS’s recite the RS Theme? Huh. Who knew. I’ve never seen that and didn’t even know it was “a thing”.

😮 (there should be a snark emoticom)Years ago, we attended “the one true ward”. Lots of imperfect people trying very hard to do better. I miss that ward.
And RS never quoted the theme there either. Maybe it is a regional thing?
