It’s just out now. I know it should go in books when there are reviews I will put it in, but I am sticking it here because Women’s History is a touchy subject. I am hoping for something mind blowing with it. I hope I am not too disappointed.

I saw this announcement this morning and actually I am a bit scared. Let me explain why.

I see the church quite often being attacked that the church says something is a 10 on a scale of progress, but most “others” see it as we are at a 3. The church comes along with a buried essay or a book like this and says, “we are a 4 or a 5.” TBM’s want to then tell anybody that says the church is not approaching perfection, “see how GREAT we are – how dare anyone say we are not progressive!” It often feels like the church is only giving an inch in the yards worth of progress they need to come clean.

There are examples that don’t fit this mold. The JS Papers project does seem to give most papers directly about JS. But these volumes don’t need to be measured in pages, but approaching how much of a FOOT in width they are. Almost nobody is willing to read all of these except historians – and they already know all this stuff.

I love that these are being published.

I hope the content is as comprehensive and full as the Joseph Smith Papers volumes already published.

I know some of the people involved in the projects. Many of them are solid historians and various levels of heterodox. I am hopeful, not pessimistic.
