GuestQuote:I respectfully ask that this thread be closed. While I share the concerns enumerated here, I don’t know how this helps anyone StayLDS.
I did have this thought when the thread started. Not all of our threads are directed at helping people StayLDS. So where’s the line?
From from another point of view, if an individual doesn’t want to read certain threads he or she is welcome to ignore them and/or not comment.

GuestI tried to bring the religion into the discussion as well, to make it somewhat applicable. People have opinions on politics and religion. They can be talked through respectfully. I read his followup:
Quote:I simply note that there are people who are LDS and may be experiencing elements of faith crisis, but who are supporters of one of the current set of candidates. I think first and foremost, we want them to feel welcome here. Political discussions that assume that everyone who is struggling to StayLDS is unhappy with the field of candidates or is of a particular political persuasion will ultimately feel like a stiff arm to people who don’t actually fit those molds, but who come here for spiritual/religious support.
I’ve read through the comments in that thread again, and I simply don’t agree with the concern.
I feel it is something he can ignore if he doesn’t like that thread, but it isn’t really casting some light on the mission of the website in my opinion. It’s just general discussion.
Open to what others think. That’s just my view.

GuestThat’s a very good question. Sometimes I wish there were a dedicated forum for discussing things that weren’t as heavy as life, death and the fate of the universe. Like a small section where people could talk about movies, albums, how their day went. If all we ever talk about is matters of faith it’s harder to get to know one another (is that a goal?).
Munch and Mingle forum?
On the flip side I can see how something like that could be a distraction. Maybe the issue was more with discussing politics as opposed to missing the mission of the site?
The three things you aren’t supposed to talk about.
Sex
Religion
Politics
We already do two out of the three.
Maybe his concern is with branching out into the third forbidden realm. Like if we don’t moderate it could open up the floodgates of political discourse. Especially with the way things are going this election year.

GuestIt just seems like we all participated in that thread…did it really raise red flags to anyone as they did? It didn’t to me. March 7, 2016 at 5:16 pm #309854Anonymous
GuestDepends on whether you like Hitler. March 7, 2016 at 5:17 pm #309855Anonymous
GuestAlso, the second post in the thread is a moderator warning. March 7, 2016 at 6:02 pm #309856Anonymous
GuestI think it should be locked. It’s a hot topic in itself and it does distract from our intent. I am happy we ran it, but Ann already deleted a post, then left a note that she deleted it. We have crossed into a place of intensity. Most years it’s not a deal, but this year families are going to be divided on this as much as faith crisis. We aren’t quipped to do this. It’s a whole ‘nother game. I vote we lock it with a message that people can start a PM group on it if they like, but we are religious in context.

GuestSheldon helped push the action that was needed, so I locked it. We can discuss here if we should re-open, but I didn’t want further comments like Sheldon’s, or responses to Sheldon.
Do any of you feel like a mod post to explain it is needed? I am not sure my post was sufficient or correct for our views on why it is locked. Should I edit it?

GuestMy vote remains the same. I like discussing politics. I too am a concerned voter – but this isn’t the place. We have enough stuff we deal with. I think the thread was wrapped nicely, now needs to shut. March 7, 2016 at 9:35 pm #309859Anonymous
GuestI had my concerns to begin with, I have no problem with it being locked, although I don’t see Sheldon’s post as any more inflammatory than some of the others. Ah, religion and politics! So if we were to make a further explanation, would it be to simply say that after further review we have decided that this topic does not really fit our mission and/or may be offensive to some?

GuestI think an honest reply that this topic can be deeply dividing and we have enough to work with on Staying LDS or at least respectful to LDS, it’s better we allow strong political debates to happen off the main board. People can PM the whole board and start a discussion among themselves. March 8, 2016 at 3:24 am #309861Anonymous
GuestI like mom3’s suggestion. I was one of the most guilty in the thread, so feel free to mention even the admins don’t handle the topic very well.

GuestYup, keep it locked. This is a pretty polarizing political season and I can already tell that the opinions are strong. -
