I don’t know why but today I was flooded with longing for Gordon B. Hinckley. I happened to glance at my book shelf and saw my copy of The Life of Our Lord by Charles Dickens. I remembered President Hinckley bringing that book to the forefront in GC. Shortly there after Deseret book published copies of it. Mine isn’t from Deseret Book, it’s from some one else, but I remember being so excited that he did that.

As the day moved forward I thought of so many things he did.

Because of him Chieko Okazaki became a voice that I still drink deeply from.

Because of him single sisterhood shook off it’s shame, in the form of Sheri Dew.

He was energetic, humorous, warm. He was progressive in many respects.

I can’t fully explain it, because I am huge Thomas Monson fan. Have been all my life. Today though Gordon Bitner Hinckley decided to take center stage, without even asking.

I think for many GBH was the face of the church for quite awhile. He certainly was a likeable guy. We also obtained a copy of that book after his recommendation (also not from DB). I really like Dickens and suppose that he was one of those who was inspired with truth. In some ways I do miss him, although there were a few things of his legacy I don’t like (think one set of earrings for example). I do like TSM as well, but I have not always. I shall miss him as well.

I really think he would have handled a lot of recent issues differently…better.

DJ – I totally agree with this

Because I can now say he was infallible I can separate it out. It still does bite in RS when one earring is the mark of obedience during a lesson. I cringe every time.

I think after puzzling over my strange experience I may have been yearning for Ann’s assessment.

Without consciously realizing it I was yearning for his better skills, his PR savvy, his slight progressive side, and his “love your neighbor” side. I think maybe the entire PR nightmare that keeps damaging so many souls in so many areas might have been spared had he still been at that helm.

I think my heart is praying for some miracle it may not find.

    I agree, I miss him.

Hinkley was the grandpa you loved to visit. Monson is a nice grandpa but when you visit you interact more with his caregivers. The upcoming grandpas… you probably won’t enjoy visiting with because they only like to talk politics and complain about how long it’s been since you last visited. The even younger grandpa waiting behind those guys scares you a little.

I think GBH’s biggest asset was that he was able to soft pedal a hard line approach. He never seemed the grumpy old man, and if you asked him a question you got a “Well, you know not everything is exactly as it seems….” (I’m thinking the 60 Minutes interview here.) I do miss his ability to do what he did so well, and TSM is not good at it at all – hence he (wisely) stays away from the press/public. I’m sure there are some media savvy types who could really push his buttons and expose his gruff side. Following Nibbler’s lead, TSM is the grandpa who is sometimes grumpy but always tells you the same stories when you go to visit and you dread the visits just for that reason – even though the stories aren’t bad. I will refrain from sharing my opinion about RMN because he is the first since ETB that I will have to think about before I raise my hand to sustain him. I stake patriarch once confessed that he had to pray for a few weeks before he could sustain ETB as well.

Inwardly I keep praying for some sort of sudden stroke, illness, even death for the line up right behind. I know Benson was mellower than I expected, but he was older, too. I will keep the present grandpa as long as possible. Kind of a SWK deal. I need Uchtdorf – He’s my only hope. (Star Wars reference implied)

It really would be a shocker if they broke from tradition and made DFU as president.
