GuestYou’ve probably seen rob4hope’s request for a new account. I just PMed him asking if he’d rather be resynced with his original account, like if he set the old one up with the wrong email or forgot his password or something. I’d like to hold off on approving the first post from his new account until I hear back.

GuestI read and approved it before reading this. Sorry.

GuestNo matter. It appears as though Rob has read my PM but I think I’m going to get the silent treatment again (I sent 3 or 4 PMs back in the day that all went unanswered).
Personally I think it’s better having one rob4hope account than several, even if there is no cross-posting. I don’t expect I’ll be hearing anything from him and I certainly don’t want to hold his continued participation here hostage.
It’s up to you all.

GuestWhy did he need to change? May 26, 2016 at 4:43 am #311905Anonymous
GuestIt doesn’t seem to be a posting problem as of yet. Thanks for keeping an eye on it. May 26, 2016 at 11:20 am #311906Anonymous
GuestTo keep people in the loop: I did end up hearing back from Rob!
I’m not sure why the move to a new account but it may have been password related. I reset the password for him but then he said the system was stuck on the too many failed login attempts. I tried to log into his original account with the reset password to see what error he was getting and was confronted with the same error.
When that happens the system asks you to do another “are you human” check. Like fill in the blank: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-___ Saints.
Perhaps it was a combination of a forgotten password with the “too many failed attempts” that was complicating the situation.
I passed the captcha test for him to make sure he could get through with the updated password – then immediately logged off and erased all my cookies. I take people’s privacy extremely seriously.
If I were to do it again I’d instruct him to fill in the captcha test (I didn’t know the system did that, all I knew is that he was reporting being stuck on the error) and then have him use the link for forgotten password. I didn’t think of that in the moment and there was concern that if there was too much back and forth with nibbler then I might lose him.

I sent him a note to try again and I’m waiting on a response to that.

If he ever does get back to his old account is there a way to merge rob4hope1’s posts over to the Rob4Hope account?

GuestWell if we are changing account names I will need to be mom2.5 as one of my kids move out. The .5 is for the dog. 🙄 May 27, 2016 at 11:25 am #311908Anonymous
GuestI didn’t get a response but it looks like Rob is back to posting under the original Rob4Hope account. This morning I: 1) Moved all of rob4hope1’s posts over to the Rob4Hope account. The rob4hope1 account now has zero posts.
2) Deactivated the rob4hope1 account.

GuestAnd he is as hyperbolic as ever. Honestly, he tries my patience. May 30, 2016 at 7:55 pm #311910Anonymous

GuestI truly can’t get a handle on him. It is hard to believe, for example, that he hasn’t read some of the books he says he is reading only now, especially when he now is mentioning a litany of books that are classic faith-triers that have been around for a long time. With his history, it just stretches credibility a bit to believe he only now is reading them – and reading them so quickly.

GuestWasn’t Joseph Smith Papers project back from 2008? He is talking about it like it is current events. My vibe from him is that he is unaware. Kind of brings up what is one his mind. Not much awareness to search and read stuff stuff to see what is already out there and just share how he is just learning about it…but just talks about it unfiltered…not aware much of his timing and how others have seen that stuff for a while now or that it doesn’t fit into current discussions. His stuff kind of comes out of the blue.
That kind of thinking is why I think he responds like he does. He sees things very narrowly, and then uses hyperbole.
The thing is…I think he is sincere…it is what he is thinking. I don’t know that he is trolling to cause trouble…it is just him.
I don’t know that I can engage in his discussions. I don’t know if I have the patience to rehash my point of view over and over.
Others handle it better than I do. Shrug. I am just not tuned into how to help.

GuestThat’s what drove my “what’s the end game here?” question in his most recent thread. He may still be trying to put the genie back into the bottle? E.g. Maybe, just maybe if JS decried polygamy at his deathbed then I can still hold up this caricature of him. Old-Timer wrote:It is hard to believe, for example, that he hasn’t read some of the books he says he is reading only now, especially when he now is mentioning a litany of books that are classic faith-triers that have been around for a long time. I could probably win StayLDS’s “least read” award, I just don’t have the time for book-books but I do read. That said I see what you’re saying. E.g.:
Rob4Hope wrote:You know, the Kinderhook stuff is devastating to my testimony….just devastating.
After a certain point can a testimony be devastated any further? The Kinderhook plates devastate a testimony one week, the Greek Psalter devastates it the next, polygamy will devastate it
againin subsequent weeks. It’s hard to believe that someone could get devastated time and time again each time they look at a different facet of the same object. I don’t really think he needs us to explain to him what the Joseph Smith Papers are. Scanned documents. Sure there may be room to speculate that people decide to avoid scanning certain documents but outside that I don’t get where the big conspiracy lies.
I think it’s his style to say something that’s meant to shock just to get the conversation going. The real conversation is “this is what I recently read about the Kinderhook Plates” but it’s presented in a more indignant manner to generate discussion.

GuestHe is one person I would like to know face to face. Online is so hard to guess. For most of our conversations that works out just fine. Every once in a while and Rob falls there I can’t get a read. That makes answering hard. I want to care, to assist, to listen but most of the time I can’t. Very frustrating. Cwald I had met a couple of times I could read him pretty well because of it. It also let me walk away with very little guilt. Rob is getting to that point for me, and I don’t like it if I have misread it. -
