GuestWe attended the congregation in our area. Nothing very exciting. Nice people, very small congregation. Invited us to attend a BBQ. The meeting wasn’t that interesting. I flipped through the hymn book, we do share similar hymns, that was the only similarity I found. I have heard others say it’s great. June 1, 2016 at 6:43 pm #312108Anonymous
GuestI’ve studied the CofChrist/RLDS Church quite a bit. I have nothing but respect for them. There are a few issues where a post-FC LDS member might find some refuge: They never accepted polygamy as doctrine, they de-emphasize JS compared to the LDS faith; calling him the “Founding Prophet”, and seem to look to JSIII as being as consequential as JSJR in their history, they never had a priesthood ban based on race, they have ordained women to the priesthood since the mid-80s, they strive to mainstream their church (coming across as less self-promoting… for example, they accept baptism by other Christian denominations), and they strive as much as anything else for Peace in the world.
There are a few issues that will still trouble post-FC LDS members: They do believe JS was a prophet of God, they accept that he did practice polygamy, they use the JST as a primary canon, they do not believe in marriage beyond this life, they can be quite fractious. I don’t mean that in a pejorative sense… it’s just that they came into being based on dissent. And they still embrace dissent and political machinations within the organization much more than the LDS Church. For example, I can think of two relatively recent resolutions that made it from lower congregations all the way to their Biannual World Conference before being ruled “out of order” by the Church’s First Presidency; one of which was later accepted by the successor FP, voted on, and made part of their policies. In addition, the Church has suffered a lot of defections over the last few decades; where more conservative members have left due to what they perceived as the too-liberal direction of the Church. Whole new Churches have sprung up in the wake.
So, it’s not really like the kinder gentler LDS Church; I see it as oddly related, but more dissimilar than the superficial similarities might seem to indicate.
