Advice to a new bishop

Oh how I wish Church HQ would do a better job training bishops. Not only for the member’s sake, but for the bishop’s (and his family’s) sake.

I know….I am sort of glad I missed that bullet. If it ever came my way, and I felt I had to accept a Bishop’s calling, the way I would lead would be WAY softer than it would have b een 12 years ago. that is for sure.

I do wish we had paid people in positions that interact with members. The leaders have a strong impact on your overall experience if you are buying into the church program (at least, it impacted mine significantly). And when they are just too busy to do anything but keep house, it can really hurt the experience of the members.

At one time, people could point at my comments and cry “Priestcraft! Priestcraft!”, but now that the cat is out of the bag that mission presidents, higher level GA’s and others are paid, I don’t think people can rely on the “no paid ministry” principle. That was a myth for many years, with many members today still believing the people at the top aren’t paid. It’s not true, and with the hours that Bishops and SP’s have to put in, I think it could be justified in principle. Perhaps not in practice, but definitely in principle.
