This is in reference to SD’s Cool Features on Discussion Forums thread.

Some of the features that he mentions are available at the new norordermormon site. They also use phpbb and have the notification system that lets you know where you’ve been quoted by someone.

We’re at phpbb version 3.0.12. I noticed that the most current version is 3.1.10. Any thoughts on upgrading?

This is assuming that the upgrade process is easy for current phpbb systems. Easy and free. If anything we may want to move to version 3.0.14, just in case there are security updates.

Also worth noting. Version 3.2 is slated to be released soon. We could wait a little while and leapfrog version 3.1.

Edit: I’ll also include this: https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3.1/ug/upgradeguide/upgrade3/” class=”bbcode_url”>https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3.1/ug/upgradeguide/upgrade3/. It’s not point click but fairly straight forward. Again, we might wait a while and go directly to 3.2. Save the hassle of doing this twice.

I would love updating but am not about to try to do it. Anyone who is tech savvy enough to not screw it up is welcome to have at it.

I think updating first to the current version might be the better option (if it isn’t a massive process), since new versions often have bugs that haven’t been fixed.

The good news is that phpbb 3.1 came out a little over two years ago, so it’s tested. It’s currently on version 10.

As for the question of who does this? I assumed this was a Brian task. It would take someone that has access to the actual file system and database.

I’m not opposed to upgrading, but I’m not the one to do the actual task. I will note that I use the Roku forum that also uses phpBB and they did upgrade several months ago. It was not without any hitches but the bugs have been worked out. I think the biggest problems were signing in and posting after the upgrades.

Hehe. Hi Guys. I just logged in to check on things and see about upgrading the forum software. I haven’t done that in a while for the site. I am going to try to find some time over the holidays. I guess that’s OK to do since y’all are already talking about it.

A couple of techie things to note in case I ever got hit by a bus or otherwise disappear for the internet:

The “Justification Text” registration verification module we have used successfully for so many years often breaks during a major phpBB update. When that happens, I have had to hack the code a little to tweak it.

We also have the Tapatalk app installed for mobile users.

I host a few domains off the server that runs StayLDS.com: StayLDS forums, StayLDS wordpress site, FacesEast.org forums, and also my own personal art/music website (brainskan.com). FacesEast seems kind of dead now. I was thinking about contacting Charlene Eastwood to see if it was OK to turn off comments and just leave it in place as an archive of thought on split-faith marriages. I could move my personal site off the server whenever too, if needed. I am not very active with it. Anyways … the whole point of telling all this is that it’s a little more complicated of a setup than just the StayLDS.com phpBB forum. Whoever does the upgrades has to pay attention to the hosting and database structure.

John Dehlin owns the StayLDS.com domain name and has always seemed rather attached to keeping control of it. I “own” the hosting account/server and did most of the site setup and customization. John D’s organization has reimbursed me for the annual hosting costs for the past couple years. I usually get in touch with him in January to ask about it before the February annual renewal. It’s only about $150/year or so for the hosting account. I send his bookkeeper the receipt after I pay for it. It’s been a nice arrangement, not having to manage the fundraisers anymore in the forums. We keep a “Donate Now” button on the WordPress site to help raise money which flows through the Open Stories Foundation (non-profit tax deductible).

Good to see you guys too! Carry on with the good work that you guys do. I will work on the upgrades probably during a long New Year’s weekend I have coming up.

I just used Faceseast as a guinea pig and tested the automatic upgrade option. Let’s just say that it did not go well. It caught on fire, fell over and then sank into the swamp. 😆

This is going to be an ugly upgrade…

(Don’t worry. I used my powers of resurrection and raised Faceseast from the dead from a backup)
