GuestStrange lady. I do believe that there are some elements of white nationalism in our church. I believe that those elements are getting smaller and more out of place with each passing year.

GuestInteresting, and out of line with the church. I think she is absolutely right that the church is welcoming diversity – and well we should be. We are not a white bread Utah church anymore, and I’m not sure God ever intended us to be. April 16, 2017 at 10:11 pm #320345Anonymous

GuestSimple summary: She started out as a self-described “pagan leftist”, went through a few Protestant religions, and currently is LDS. She swung from crazy left to crazy right, and, based on what I’ve read about and from her, probably has some serious clinical issues.
When I say she’s nuts, I mean I think she has serious clinically issues. I shouldn’t use a term like “nuts”, because I try hard to be sensitive to mental health issues, but, in this case . . . it is hard to practice fully what I preach.

GuestAt least the church took down her I’m a Mormon page: http://web.archive.org/web/20170326231100/https://www.mormon.org/me/2D8V/Ayla She sounds a little zonkers. Can you be excommunicated or disciplined for publicly spouting racist propaganda? Seems like that would be as good of a reason as any.

GuestI was so sad to discover that she removed the post from her blog! You know what the REAL problem is?! Educated women having less children than uneducated women!!! If only she were better educated… 😆 I agree with her on some areas. I think that racism against whites has increased (same with sexism against males). And I wish that there was more tolerance for women who want to be a stay-at-home mothers. But her arguments feel a little less like they apply to race, and more towards generational differences. White culture isn’t being taken over by black culture. The next generation is simply taking what they like best from all cultures, and ignoring the rest. Just like many of us, with religion.

GuestShe refers to “ghetto culture”. I suppose it depends what you mean by that but there is a good argument for saying ghetto culture (as I would understand it) should be thrown out the window. If I was a black person – especially a parent – it would piss me off too, all these violent, women hating thugs being promoted all the time as models for youth. Gangster rappers are the worst of it. Their ideas are toxic, most of them are low intelligence, while more intelligent black musicians, including rappers such as Public Enemy get ignored. April 17, 2017 at 1:29 pm #320351Anonymous

Interesting question. There is always leadership roulette, but I think the easy straight answer is no. She’s not the only racist that ever existed in the church and unless her remarks can be construed as teaching against the Brethren she’s probably OK. I think this freedom of thought/belief is tolerated within the church, and that tolerance is a good thing for some of us here. I don’t think her comments would be welcome from the pulpit and I do think that if she were asked to stop saying such things over the pulpit and refused and continued to do so she might face discipline. I would bet she’d be one who make a big deal of it were she to be disciplined. Honestly, just from what I see in this post, there’s no indication she can’t answer the TR questions.
I recently had a conversation about bigotry and racism, and as much as we might find those things repugnant, it is not illegal to be a racist or bigot toward anyone or anything. Don’t misunderstand, I am not espousing violence or discrimination but holding the opinion and even publicly meeting with like minded people is not against any US laws – that’s why the KKK can exist.

Guest[Admin Note]: Let’s be extremely careful about discussing “ghetto culture” and applying it primarily or exclusively to one group of people. Broadly defined, that term could apply to any and all people – but in the USA it has come to mean African-Americans only. That is wrong and racist. Fwiw, “ghetto” originally meant nothing more than a neighborhood comprised entirely of one group of people. In that light, most small, rural towns in America are racial ghettos – and many in Utah are racial and religious ghettos, with the only racial diversity being Hispanic (many of whom started out as migrant farm workers). In its purest sense, it carries no negative connotations, but it became racist or ethnic slang when it became a way to describe “others” who were different.
So, again, let’s be very careful about how we use that term. Even unintentionally, we can’t support even subtly racist statements here.

GuestThe lady in question came on the Racism 101 podcast on rational faiths. It is a bit long, but hearing her side of the story is interesting. As in most cases, you get a slightly different take on her. I still think she is still out there a bit, but I think she has been maligned a bit more.

GuestA ghetto is an enclave within a city (originally Jewish and fenced/walled off) – small rural settlements would be more like a shtetl. April 19, 2017 at 2:32 am #320355Anonymous
GuestI understand that, Sam. I was being very general. (“In that light…”) Thanks for the clarification. It helps make the point I was trying to make.

I worked for a psychologist for a while who was of the opinion that “crazy” is a fine diagnosis for anything we don’t know how to cure yet. Not much point classifying it beyond that until one can define what to do with it.
