GuestI finally have a new job, which I am excited about. It doesn’t actually start until the beginning of Sept., and it’s 2 hours away (but I’ll figure that out). I will likely be around less after that but I will still be here. July 26, 2017 at 8:54 pm #322878Anonymous
GuestCongrats! Two hours? Yikes.
What will you be doing?

GuestIt’s supervising the education program for incarcerated youth in a minimum security facility. They really liked me, I really liked them, it just clicked. The rest we’ll figure out – a 4 hour per day commute is out of the question and it will probably involve staying closer at least a couple days a week. July 27, 2017 at 12:07 am #322880Anonymous
GuestWonderful. I can totally see how your personality would fit. May it be full of amazing experiences. We’ll miss you but this is too good to pass up.

GuestThat kinda commute is rough…you’ll run out of podcasts pretty quickly. I would think staying around there a bit to cut down on travel would be needed. That’s good. Maybe that gives you some time in a place when you don’t have family around (sad
) to check in with us still and have us be a substitute.
The opportunity sounds cool. Congratulations!!

GuestSome kind of staying there some of the time is on the table. We’ve got a little time to figure some stuff out. July 27, 2017 at 6:15 am #322883Anonymous
GuestThat is wonderful. I actually interviewed for a similar position here in ND a while ago, but they wanted a certified teacher, so it was offered to someone else. Spilt housing isn’t ideal. But it is better than being apart for extended periods of time. My wife and I have had to do that more than once, and it wasn’t fun.

GuestI guess with considering staying a bit closer I’m talking maybe a couple nights a week. We have had several couples in our ward over the years where work situations have made this a necessity. One of my best friends in the ward has been doing it for a few years. He works downstate because he can make way more money there than here, but their families are all here. He works a 4 day week and is home every weekend for three days. Downstate housing is quite pricey so he has made some frequent stayer deals with hotels and manages to make out pretty well. My wife actually works 4 day weeks and doesn’t get home until around 6 anyway, we really wouldn’t be missing much together time. On the other hand, I also talked to a friend who used to commute about an hour and a half each way daily and he said he didn’t mind it – got lots of thinking done.
As a side note, this more than doubles our income and the time off is generous to say the least.

GuestI used to have a 90 minute commute each way when i lived in NJ and worked in NYC and took the bus in. I didn’t mind it too much. Read lots of books, listened to stuff. But it isn’t fun during winter months when roads are bad. You do feel you waste a lot of time but if you can mentally prepare and accept that…it is manageable. It just cuts into a lot of life stuff. But you do what you have to do. It isn’t too bad. That was over 15 yrs ago. Nowadays, there are even more options for entertainment while mobile that can just substitute any online reading or posting and TV watching and entertainment while commuting. Obviously depends if you are using public transportation or are driving yourself.

GuestUnfortunately the new job site is very rural and there is no public transportation anywhere nearby. That would otherwise be a very viable option for me and I don’t think I’d mind at all. July 27, 2017 at 5:05 pm #322887Anonymous
GuestI don’t know… a 2 hour commute one way (aka the California commute) and it’s time to start looking into a cheap tiny in the bad part of town near the job and only go home on the weekends.apartmentMy job moved to a different county and it made most people go from a less than 10 minute commute to an hour commute. One guy even got stuck with a 90 minute commute.
The compromise was that our work allows us to work from home one day per week. The 90 minutes guy works in the office one day per week but is usually in more than that because of other obligations.
I hope you can work something out… and have an automatic transmission. 2 hours… I’d spend 90% of the commute thinking, “When the hell can I retire?”
