GuestUchtdorf kicks off. Pretty basic core gospel message of God loves us and the gospel brings hope/happiness. He seems to not conflate the church and the gospel much. Hopefully it sets the tone. September 30, 2017 at 4:57 pm #323720Anonymous
GuestPres. Oscarson’s talk was very good. DON’T listen to Elder Oaks’ talk. It is ultra-orthodox about marriage. It will upset you. It is black and white, and it comes across as deeply condescending, even though he says we need to love others who don’t see things the way we do.

GuestI came home from dropping DD off for swim practice and Oaks is giving his usual. So I’m hiding in the basement for the duration. See, there’s two problems with using the FamProc to prove that gay marriage is wrong:
1) the FamProc doesn’t say anything about gay marriage, only that hetero marriage makes God happy; and
2) the FamProc doesn’t bear the signatures of any prophets, seers, and revelators and has never been canonized as scripture.

GuestYeah, Oaks’ talk is a hard pass. Very black and white regarding marriage, with a little gender thrown in. He tries to establish visionary prophecy of the Proc through providing chronological history. I don’t see it jiving with many people on this forum. September 30, 2017 at 5:02 pm #323723Anonymous
GuestSaturday Morning review thus far: 1st Talk:
 2nd Talk:
 Wow. This is shaping up to be one of the best sessions of conference in recent memory.3rd Talk:
💩 But it’s DHO, I wouldn’t expect him to talk about any other subject or talk about his subject in any other way. Silver lining. At least he’s done for the weekend.

GuestI agree with Ray on both counts. Oscarson is fine, she didn’t speak in her Primary voice and it was a nice talk about service. Oaks is connecting the Proclamation on the Family (which seems to be getting lots of attention in my area of late for some reason) to marriage, specifically noting cohabitation and gay marriage as being in opposition to the document. A thinly veiled anti gay marriage speech IMO. I’m a little disappointed because I thought he had given up that battle. Like Ray says, most here will likely want to skip it. Good point. I’d wager Sat. morning vies with Sat. afternoon for being the least watched session.

GuestIf I heard between the words correctly, DHO just doubled down on gay marriage. Very disappointing. September 30, 2017 at 5:05 pm #323727Anonymous
GuestI liked Pres. Oscarson’s talk. She talked about the youth’s (and frankly most everyone these days, according to me) propensity to always be on your phone, trying to connect to people through social media while ignoring people who are around us all the time. It’s something that I’ve been personally working on lately. It was a great talk. September 30, 2017 at 5:06 pm #323728Anonymous
GuestMy dad will love this talk. He lived in St Paul for a while with a huge Nepali community. September 30, 2017 at 5:14 pm #323729Anonymous
Guest“We can trust God because He loves us.” And back to the basement, I guess.

GuestElder Pingree said something interesting, something that I’ve thought about from time to time. To paraphrase, because time has passed this won’t be remotely accurate, Jesus deflected praise and pointed to his father in heaven. Yet often we express our worship and reverence towards Jesus proper. Wouldn’t Jesus reorient us to our father in heaven… or would he accept the praise. Is the focus of the gospel Jesus or “the father?”
Just thoughts.

GuestI’m liking Christofferson. Core doctrine about Christ/atonement/sacrament. I honestly don’t think we make those connections often enough, particularly between the sacrament and Christ’s proclamations that he is the Bread of Life and the Living Water. GuestWhy??? Just why??? Elder Oak’s talk has me FUMING. We know where the church stands in regards to SSM. Can we just drop it?!?! It is HURTFUL. September 30, 2017 at 5:23 pm #323733Anonymous

I’m kind of jaded on the subject. Birds tweet. Dogs bark. DHO talks about religious freedom and how terrible gay marriage is. We can drop it, I’m not sure DHO can.
