GuestSee viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8534viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8534” class=”bbcode_url”> Recently a bulk PM went out. Someone, I forget who, sent out a PM that went to the following:
Sheldon, Administrators, Registered users
Which I think means it went out to every single user registered with the site. Maybe the system got overwhelmed and something went wrong. I never got an email notification for that PM.
Some time afterwards someone else replied, I’m thinking they opted to reply all, meaning every board member got sent a PM with their reply.
In the admin control panel I see:
Maximum number of allowed recipients (PM): 12
In this case they may have skirted around that rule; there were only 3 recipients but one of them was “Registered users” (over 2000 recipients). I don’t know if it overwhelmed the system but maybe we should consider restricting people from PMing user groups.
There’s an option in user group permissions: “Can send messages to groups”
This bulk PM thing may or may not be related to the permission denied error. I’m mentioning it just in case.
Maybe it’s a chmod issue with ucp.php?

GuestI was able to get the site working again. It was very strange. The permissions for ucp.php were changed to “0000” meaning that nobody could access the login. I changed them back to “0644” which is the appropriate levels for that file. I suspect that mass PM triggered a security lockdown routine by the hosting service. I will look into locking down the ability to PM user groups. There’s no need for anybody to be able to do that.

GuestI did reply to the mass PM – I don’t believe I reply-alled, but I can’t be sure (I don’t often do a reply all). If it was my reply – I am so so so sorry.
Thank you Brian and Nibbler for helping us out here. I had addiction withdrawal yesterday. It was painful.
Here’s to a better week.

GuestI went into the permissions settings and changed it for the “Registered Users” group. They can not send PMs to groups now. They have always had a lower multiple users PM setting at 5. That overrides the board-wide setting Nibbler saw which is 12. “Newly Registered Users” can not send PMs at all. Those are people who successfully registered, but have not yet been approved by a Moderator. They have tighter security and lack most permissions.
Everything looks functional now. Email me at
brianj.roaming@gmail.com if anything still isn’t working correctly. You can also text message me at 240-462-3134 if it’s an emergency. I usually don’t answer calls from unknown numbers.October 16, 2017 at 6:24 pm #324291Anonymous

GuestI recommended she send Sheldon a Private Mesaage and also write a post to everyone asking for input regarding her question . It appears she misunderstood my request and sent one PM to everyone. Sorry for the confusion.
