A few years ago – Lindsey Stirling was filleted by the modesty police for this dress.

So big was the outrage she penned a response in LDSLiving

The naysayers picked the wrong girl. Miss Mormon Violinist rocks normal clothes and costumes in DWTS. I for one am dang proud of her.

I love it when revenge looks this good.

    Happy rant over.

You could have at least put a NSFMM’s (not safe for mormon males) in the title.

I didn’t expect to click on this thread and see…sh..sh..shoulders. Ahhhhhhhhh

    My favorite Lindsey Stirling video.

She is VERY talented and a positive role model for my violin playing daughter.

I saw a video with her in Good Mythical Morning a few days back, which featured Lindsey Stirling as a guest. Not immodest at ALL (she was wearing this loose fitting, tan hoodie), but you could tell she wasn’t wearing any garments. And I thought “Huh. I wonder if she’s still affiliated with the Church?”

Not sure if she has gone through the temple.

She has. She is a returned missionary. She often speaks about being a happy Mormon. Especially when she was a contestant on America’s Got Talent. Sometimes in videos you can see her garments.

I think what I like about her and her present situation is her spunk.

What I have also enjoyed with a bit of snark is the silence from the Modesty Police. Maybe they’ve written her off. We do that so often you know. But I am glad she didn’t let them win.

Yep. She just seems happy all the time – but not forced happy face.

As far as garments go, in show business there are times you have to do without them…

As per this one. Couldn’t very well not do the scene due to garments huh?

She would look great in Lord of the Rings if you put some elf ears on her and had her be some kind of an Elfin minstrel.

She’s a delightful young woman… but she has had a fight with anorexia though and has spoken publicly about it.

Why is it that men can play professional sports (which are entertainment) like basketball and no one asks them about their garments. A man can dance in a leotard and no one asks about his garments. A man can do a shirtless episode in a play and no one asks about his garments.

A woman does something something professionally that requires a particular costume, uniform or leotard and suddenly everyone is looking for garment lines.

    I find it annoying.

Maybe because Mormons practically worship fertility?

Crazy thing: before my FC, every month or so I’d have an intrusive thought about what it might be like to also be married to some other specific woman. After my FC, after I no longer believed polygamy was possibly good or might come back, I haven’t had a single one of those. I’ve also had a much easier time dismissing intrusive fantasy-style thoughts about the women around me. So maybe it’s personal shame with a dash of polygamy that makes garment-checking women a thing.

What’s weird is that it’s hard to convince Mormons that their hangups are pathological. I remember dismissing things like what I just wrote as being wrong-headed and dangerous.

I believe this has to do with how garments relate to modesty and how modesty is not uniformly applied between genders. Women have traditionally been the guardians of chastity. Women have been expected to be dress attractively but not so much as to seem to be inviting or tempting. Garment lines are one of the ways that Mormons judge the difference between sufficiently stylish/attractive and too much.
