    From lds.org:

    Quote:

Forty years ago, President Spencer W. Kimball announced that the blessings of the priesthood would be extended to all of God’s children everywhere in the world. The worldwide celebration will be broadcast from the Conference Center on Temple Square, Friday, June 1, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. Details will be announced at a later date.

I’m more than a little nervous. On one hand, it could/would be awesome if the FP would point members toward the essay and acknowledge that this was something that it took too long to get right. On the other, given the recent “revelation” dialog, I fear that the message will be more along the lines of “Look how God is leading this Church with ongoing revelation!” I would even be OK with that if the message was, “We screwed this up so badly that God finally had to give us direct revelation to get our house in order”, but I doubt that will happen.

If the message is “God Leads this Church”, I think this celebration will just shed more negative light on the Church on a topic that has largely disappeared into history.

    Couple points of trivia.

None of the then FP or Q12 is alive today. TSM was the last surviving witness to the change. At the time, only one of the current FP/Q12 was a GA. And no, it wasn’t RMN, who was a still-practicing heart surgeon. And no, it wasn’t DHO, who at the time was the President of BYU. And no, it wasn’t US (Soares)… of course not… he was 19 at the time. Come on… think about it. Does old ship zion provide any hints that help you? Yep, MRB was a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy at the time of the lifting of the ban.

I am scared too. We never do handle our real history well. And I am all over the idea of history is messy.

I might die though if the word Essay even came up.

The Church will do whatever it needs to do, to survive.

And right now it is growing fast in Africa. So no need to bring up that dirt since, “Some things that are true are not very useful.” It isn’t useful to the church right now to dive into that.

At a local level I have seen a bit of positive movement. We have 2 HC’s and two EQP that are black – and I live in white suburban. We have maybe 1% or 2% black members from what I see at stake conference).

The local temple has a picture of a black women right as you walk up the stairs (the same temple that a dozen or so years before one of the now black HC’s and his wife was told by a temple worker – “you don’t belong here”).

I don’t know if I can handle another party right now. I’m still worn out from the 50 year anniversary of civil rights shindig from several years ago.

I am cautiously hopeful that the celebration will include some sort of acknowledgement that real people suffered because of the ban and that such was not God’s will (Which would be pretty earth shattering to some of the hardliners).
