Sen. Hatch spoke for 10 minutes on the Senate floor last Wednesday about the national suicide rate and our responsibility to love LBGT people and accept them for who they are. I could quibble with some things (like leaving off the “Q”), and I could call him a hypocrite for still opposing same-sex marriage, but that would be a shame. This represents a HUGE paradigm shift for him, and I celebrate his repentance (“change”) and his open plea in his speech.
Seriously, some of what he said shocked me – in a wonderful way. Past be damned, this is worthy of celebration. Please watch the entire thing.

It has become something of a pitfall for the unwary, as a lot of terms these days. That is something which panders to a sort of elitism, not equality.
This is real progress and I am glad to see him do this. He carries some weight in Utah. As a top elected official he SHOULD be calling attention to this as Utah has a problem in this area. I attended our local Pride parade. I came to the conclusion as I watched the parade that the healthiest thing is to accept and move on. I am excited that an anchor Mormon took such a public stand. He is bucking a lot. That is risky. Brick by brick we will build the bridge that should have existed in the first place. mom3 wrote:

The problem is hardliners. Not only on our side, but the maniacs who go round smashing up churches.

He did not talk about it as a choice, but validates LGBT members as God’s creations as they are.That seems significant to me. I’m glad he said that.
How could church policy change if the church leaders begin to see it that way? Would we not have to alter the proclamation (my hope)?
He just blatantly said it. And he is a respected member of the Utah community. I have to think church leaders listen to him.
He’s an interesting character. Not so long ago he was arguing for medicinal cannabis in the senate. Curt, thanks for sharing. That’s real progress for a member of the church with conservative views. :thumbup:
