    This….

I was blessed to have a visiting minister assigned to me who seems to love me (and my family) for who we are. I emailed her every month for the 4 months she was assigned to me, and she always wrote back lovingly. The past 2 Sundays have been hard on me because I was handling both girls myself – but is harder on me recently.

Anyways, we walk in the door and my 8 year old doesn’t want to be there, my toddler wants to chew on everything and be at home sleeping, and I am 51% percent sure I made the right judgement call in staying at church. So, I ask this sister if she would sit with us – and she did. She helped me keep the toddler from escaping into the pews, and monitored my 8 year old when I needed to take the cranky toddler out of the chapel. She “moved in” enough to see me…

Thanks On Own for sharing this.

Three cheers to the church for publishing it.

Even more kudo’s to her for writing it.

They even posted it on the LDS FB-page (or, do they do that with every blog post?). I don’t always delve deep into everything they post on the LDS FB-page but, I tend to  quite often just by looking at the titles/what they post.

The comments on it weren’t all that bad either. Many people seemed to agree with the article (although some didn’t).

I think a major complication of listening to a person with a F/C with the intent to understand is that by understanding their position your own position may shift.

One piece of advice from some wonderful LDS instructors on marriage and communication – “In order to honor the relationship, it is important to phrase statements with the idea that we could possibly be wrong.”

I believe it takes a lot of maturity and emotional depth to say something like, “I believe the church teachings on this subject. I may be wrong about that but I am willing to excercise faith in something greater than myself that gives me hope for the future. I also respect your viewpoint.”

It is a delicate balance – but worth it.

One thing I appreciated about this article was that, although it was written from the position of a believer with a non-believing spouse, I found that the thoughts pertain to me as well. Great thoughts on how to find the good in others, even when they don’t think the same way we do, by seeing things from their point of view.
