We have two new user requests. One wants to market his blog and podcasts, while the other one (I like to share opinions.) appears to be a friend or associate of Margaret Blair Young’s in Africa. I would guess he is a relatively new convert and probably orthodox, and that he wants to share the Gosepl and strengthen testimonies (fine in and of itself).

I have reservations about approving both, for different reasons. The first one is more obvious; the second one is because I don’t want to weaken the faith of any member but, particularly, an African member in the current political climate there.

    What are your thoughts?

I saw the requests earlier today and decided to sit on them.

I found the one person and their podcasts, I listened to a few minutes of one. If they post I think they’ll either end up only promoting their podcast or correcting people with orthodox posts. People have done that here before, so no big deal.

I couldn’t find anything on the other person and lots of spammers use variants of “I like to share opinions” as justification text.

Exactly what Nibbler said, except I did not listen to any of the podcast. I don’t have a problem with people sharing posts to podcasts or blogs that some people here might find helpful and I often look at those share myself. BUT if that’s the only thing they do, and I suspect this might be the case, and they don’t add meaningfully to the conversation here then I don’t particularly care for it. Our forum is for us to share with each other here, not necessarily to point our good people elsewhere (noting that there is likely monetary gain to be had by promoting certain blogs/podcasts to increase the hit count).

I am dubious of the “I like to share opinions” justification for the same reason as Nibbler. I have encountered that before. I almost deleted that one but just decided to sit because I didn’t have a tone of time right then and I thought either we’d have a discussion like this at some point and/or someone else might just delete it. If he or she really is sincere He or she will try again with perhaps a better justification.

Let’s sit on them and see what happens.

So today there’s another one who says “I want to prove my ideas about God….” Where are they coming from? I almost approved this one, but then that particular phrase gave me the heebie-jeebies. Thoughts on contestant number 3?

Funny. I saw that request and was again paralyzed.

    Maybe:

Approve the person that wants to prove God. Knock yourself out.

Approve the person that wants to advertise their blog. If their first post is nothing more than “visit my blog” then don’t approve their first post, maybe even delete them then.

Delete “I like to share opinions” I couldn’t find any info on them. The only thing surprising about that request is that the IP was from Venezuela. Usually the “I want to share” requests come from India.

Thanks for the discussion. I am glad to follow the thought train. I concur with the conclusions.

I’m not opposed to any of this. My only reservation is the prove God one does specify “my ideas.” But we can shut it down, we’ve done it before. And, I fairly often express my ideas about God so maybe I shouldn’t point fingers.

    I carried out the actions.

The blog guy ended up pushing the blog. I’m not surprised.

Now… what think ye of approving his posts?

I did not approve the blog guy’s post, since it was an advertisement for his other stuff.

I also deleted his first comment on another post. It was a Tad Callister quote, which is fine, but it ended with an invitation to ask him any questions at a Facebook site. It was a cut-and-paste comment designed to push traffic to another site.
