GuestI just started a new job last month and am attending a new ward. Last Sunday, the Bishop asked me if I would teach the oldest youth Sunday School class. I am beyond excited. If I have enough time, I will try to post the lesson contents / outlines each week in the older thread that holds the lessons from the last time I taught this age group. It covers almost 2.5 years of lessons.
If anyone wants to look at it before I start reposting new lessons, here is the link:

Congratulations. That should be our response for every calling in the church. I would have a difficult time with it.
That is what is interesting with all church callings. Not everyone has the same skills or interests for a specific calling.

GuestYou will do great Curt. It can be tricky teaching other people’s kids. If you stray from the manual you can open yourself up to criticism. I think the scouting organization has been a better fit for me. Lat week we played water games – cuz it was hot out.

I believe you have a talent for teaching the curriculum faithfully but also gently pushing back on assumptions (thereby keeping the class interesting).

GuestCongrats on both your new job and your new calling. Two of my best friends in the ward (two males) do the older youth SS and love it. One of them has a kid in the class. They take turns leading the discussion. They have each independently shared insights from the youth from their classes. I don’t know that they use “the manual” all that often, frankly, except perhaps for discussion prompts or videos. Neither of them are the “the manual says” types, and both of them are more on the free thinking side. I think the youth want to be heard and validated more than they want to be told “we believe X” and I do think Come Follow Me allows for that where the teacher is willing to let it happen. I could see you doing exactly this and being very successful. August 12, 2019 at 6:45 pm #337065Anonymous
GuestYay for you! I’m still teaching seminary and am grateful to be out of D&C. That just about did me in!
Teaching the NT and soon the BoM will be a good thing.
I’ll be following your posts and ideas!
Thanks for sharing!
