The Church has taken major steps in response to the coronavirus world-wide. The following article summarizes what is being done.

If it continues to spread, I assume the same steps will be taken in other places, as well.

In the history of the Church, have they ever cancelled General Conference because of a potential (or actual) epidemic?

Good question. I only had time for a brief search, but the spring 1919 conference was held in June instead of April because of a flu outbreak in SLC that year and October 1957 conference was cancelled because of flu.

With modern technology they could have the meeting in an empty room though and just broadcast the whole thing. I don’t think that’s outside the realm of possibility of there is a pandemic here.

I don’t know that all of this is really necessary. After all, Trump said just the day before yesterday that “it’s all under control.” 🙄

    That is surprising.

I’ve heard people say things like the computer was invented specifically to further the work of the church. Technology isn’t going to benefit the church if they don’t use it. I wouldn’t think it’s essential to fly people in from all corners of the globe to attend a meeting. Either use skype, a one-way broadcast, or don’t attend the meeting at all and just say “covenant path, home centered church” three times in front of the mirror and you’re good for the next 6 months.

Kidding aside, the announcement was to cancel the pre-conference leadership meeting and to discourage members from traveling from outside the US to attend the regular sessions of general conference.

I hope it works. I know from many experiences that sick people don’t like to say home even from your run-of-the-mill sacrament meetings.

I heard someone share that this sounded a bit like, “Don’t bring that virus to SLC!! Stay away please.” I don’t think I agree that this was the motivation and the cancellation wasn’t an over or under reaction. I can believe that if someone had come and spread it at conference, that isn’t the “Mormon Moment” the church is looking for and they don’t want that kind of news coverage.

Especially after looking at the media coverage of that church in South Korea where a lot of people got the virus.

My impression is that Pres. Nelson is a doctor who is well-connected in China and is naturally concerned about health issues.

The missionary restrictions are the key decision for me. That shows they are taking the issue seriously as a health and life issue, first and foremost.
