    Hey guys!

I have been super busy with the podcast (Gospel Tangents) and didn’t feel super welcome here. It was funny to see all the welcoming of MH but rancor against GT. Thanks for keeping me on Emeritus status, so that I can still post here. I appreciate it.

I just read the conversation about the $130/yr fee to keep the forum alive. If you need, I think GT may be able to cover the $130/yr in the future as I think it is finally starting to become financially sustainable. I’ll still stay hands off as I have, and nobody needs to know. While I know John sometimes plays a helpful role for some people’s loss of faith, personally I am not a fan of his approach, and I would like to keep StayLDS completely independent of John.

I just got an email from a GT listener who is super angry, and has a TBM husband. I was going to point her to Mormon Stories (which is super angry), StayLDS, and perhaps Faces East but it appears to me that Faces East is dead. Is that true?

Anyway, let me know about Faces East, or any other resources I can direct this listener too. She seems very NOM with a TBM husband. I don’t know why she is venting to me, and I’d like to point her to some better resources. I’m not sure StayLDS is a good fit for her, but I thought I would let her know about it. I think she is probably a better fit for Mormon Stories. If there is something like Faces East, let me know.

I’m just curious why you felt unwelcome here. I always appreciated your perspective. When the emeritus move was made I thought about you specifically as someone I miss.

Mormon Heretic was always welcome. Gospel Tangents was NOT welcome because I was posting links to my site. There is a strong anti-commercial feeling here, and so I quit posting.

    Gotcha.

To answer your question, I am not aware of a substitute for Faces East and didn’t know they were defunct. Then again, I don’t frequent the blogernacle. I suppose NOM might be an option but it’s probably not going to improve her relationship with her husband.

This is pieced together from memory and may not be 100% accurate…

Brian Johnston maintained faceseast (along with a few other sites) on the same host account as staylds.

Over time faceseast got less and less traffic with fewer and fewer posts. After some time in this pattern Brian toyed with the idea of disabling posting on faceseast, leaving it up as an archived resource. I don’t know if he ever did that, I never visited faceseast. This was being discussed in 2016.

Brian retired ;) at the end of 2019. Staylds and faceseast were being hosted on the same account. I don’t know of any plan put in place by Brian to retain faceseast. When Brian retired faceseast may have retired with him. I’m sure there are backups somewhere.

I believe the site wasn’t getting much/any traffic for an extended period of time. Even if the site was up and we directed people there I don’t think there were any people actively posting, so they would have been met with silence. There may have been merit leaving it up as an archived reference though.

I’m sorry GT got rancor. As far as the mods/admins are concerned I’d say that the only issue they have is when people with blogs/podcasts only show up long enough to post a link to their latest material. We’ve had some drop a link without saying anything and some that would drop a link and ask for discussion but then never come back to have a dialog. From what I recall GT never did that, you always stuck around for the discussion.

For my part I remember getting triggered by some of the responses from one or two of the people you interviewed 🙂 and it’s extremely possible that some of that bled through if you defended your guest in the comments. 😳

I didn’t know that GT & MH were the same.

We can always put MH back in the regular admin pool if you’d like. That move was just a way to clean up the admin list of people that looked like they had moved on while still allowing them to have the same admin rights should they ever return.

I think I’m just too busy to be a helpful moderator, so emeritus is fine with me. It’s nice to check in once in a while with the mod group.

I’m a little less busy this month, getting more sleep, now that I’m down to 4 jobs instead of 6. I usually do a lot of football and basketball, and normally Sept is super busy, but since Pac-12 aren’t playing, ESPN is cutting back, it is really weird to have some time to spare.

Sorry to hear about Faces East, but thanks for the update.

My memory reinforces what Nibbler wrote. Faces East got to a point of an archeological dig. You can see the evidence that people used to live there and you could even talk to them, just don’t expect them to answer you back. I seem to remember that Brian disabled comments to prevent people from getting discouraged by the lack of a response.

I also am not sure that faces east would have been the best fit for this individual anyways. As I remember it was geared towards helping TBM members cope and respond charitably to their faith crisis spouses and family members. I think StayLDS is a good referral for her. Even if she decides she wants to leave, we can maybe help her to do so with a bit of a softer landing.

I also second the sentiment of this post. We would welcome posts that include links as part of a discussion and the original poster contributes in the discussion. Dropping a link to serve as a billboard to generate traffic to a site and then not engaging in discussion is an example of a behavior we want to avoid.

Soooo… I do not recall what may have happened before in regards to links to GT but please feel free to give it another go.

I would personally love this! I do have a paypal account that I had set up to receive donations. I would like to get input from the rest of the moderator team to make sure that they would be good with that.

I also agree about the Mormon Stories relationship being an odd fit. Brian said that 2 years ago he had tried to get reimbursed for the $130 fee and was generally ignored.

My experience last year was similar (after Brian retired he left the financial reigns in my hands). I called the phone number and spoke to John briefly. He said that he would love to help. I sent him receipts for reimbursement and did not get a response. For this reason I anticipate that we are on our own for funding (even though John never said that and it might still be possible to get reimbursement if I hound John enough).
