I think we need to enforce our mission focus rule a little more right now, especially with regard to political posts.

Someone mentioned it specifically in the lifecycle post, and SamBee, especially, has a hard time not making things political. He criticized one of the examples I used in the Giving Thanks” post I just wrote. I deleted that part of his comment, so I emphasized in the post it was for thanks only and added a generic note to the post saying not to criticize anyone’s comments.

Does anyone want to write a post reinforcing our mission and mentioning how it relates to politics? (Support related to church is okay; anything else is not.) I just returned and don’t want to be seen as lowering the hammer.

We’ve had some side discussions about political posts and you missed much of the stuff with our German friend and his censorship rants. Political discussions are not expressly forbidden in the rules sections, and maybe we should consider making that more clear there. Traditionally we have not permitted political discussions anyway, at least since I’ve been here. In the current now locked thread I did put that note near the beginning with the intent of making it clear we would not tolerate flaming or other volatility. I’m good with it being locked just because it’s easier and the thread did not appear to be serving a purpose of StayLDS.

The other thing about that particular thread was that Sambee was one of the main posters but isn’t even in the US and I think has some misperceptions about how it really is and really works here. That’s understandable considering that I watch a fair amount of BBC news and Skynews and there is a surprising amount of bias, which is a shift from just a few years ago.

A post merely needs to reiterate that our mission is to help people who want to stay LDS do so, that any topic focusing on that mission is fine, but that posts focusing primarily on anything else (like politics) is not in line with our mission. It also should mention that we do not like to moderate posts or threads, so we have been slow to address this recently, but that it has become necessary recently given the number of threads that have become primarily or even exclusively political. Finally, I think we should reinforce that we are not about arguing with each other – although it is perfectly fine to express different points of view.

I don’t think we need a lengthy, complicated post. I think a short, concise one is fine.

I can do the post. where would it be most appropriate?

Should I unlock the election thread, post there, and then lock it again? Or is there another place to make this point?

    Thanks, Roy!

Post it in the “Rules and Policies” category.

As a new post, it should show up to everyone who searches Active Posts, Unread Posts, or any of those categories in the Quick Links section, as well as through the Board Index.
