After some moderator discussion, the following has been added to the rules of etiquette post in the Rules and Policies section (just a heads up for everyone):

    Quote:

    Political Discussions

Members of the church around the world come in all different political and socio-economic stripes and colors. Politics and political discussions can elicit strong emotions in individuals and divide communities and families. While some members of the church live in areas where their political views are different from the majority view, this is generally not the sole reason people dissociate themselves from the church. The mission of StayLDS is to help people in their desire to maintain a relationship with the church. Discussions of politics not directly related to helping someone maintain their relationship with the church are therefore prohibited.

Can I get this policy extended to my ward building?

How are we defining politics here? I’m talking outside the realm of parties? There are a lot of political issues on here including identity politics, and I would also flag up a comment on “fact checking” to be political, because that term has taken on a new impartial meaning recently.

I’m having trouble puzzling this out. Can you clarify?

So say I drew a parallel, between the recent election and the War On Heaven – without directly ascribing anyone to the Satan role. Would that fly?

Asking because I have trouble intuiting boundaries; understanding tends to follow some mistakes.

My take on the moderator discussions we have had over the years:

    1) This is not the place to discuss the evils (or merits) of Biden, Trump, Obama, either Clinton, Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, etc. These discussions are not gospel related nor are they related to the mission of StayLDS AND there are countless other places on the web to discuss them ad nauseam, including some church related sites (not official church sites).

    2) Discussion of the recent election (or any election) is probably not appropriate in any context at StayLDS. StayLDS is not a place where we have discussions that lead to what used to be known as flaming.

    3) The questions to ask yourself in any post, new topic or reply, are “How is this helping the mission of StayLDS? ” and “How is this helping the individual (or me personally) StayLDS?” If it doesn’t have anything to with helping you or someone else StayLDS then it belongs somewhere else.

    4) We added this part to the etiquette section because while we routinely have moderated political discussion the rules did not specifically forbid them. We wanted it to be clear that political discussions are not what we’re about.

This isn’t rocket science. Attempts to do an end run by attempting to disguise political discussions as something else will also not be tolerated. Take your political discussions elsewhere.

    That helps. Thanks
