GuestI just left my job in a prison to take a weekend crisis position with another agency. That will allow me to spend more time with my wife, since we are living in separate towns right now. I also talked last week with someone about a part-time position that would mean I would be working for the Church. I mentioned specifically but without name or detail my work for the past decade in a support group focused on members with faith crises / transitions. The person was fully supportive of that work, but I probably will need to diminish my participation here – and change my username to remove all reference to my real name. it is not official yet, but I know I have the support of my direct Priesthood leaders – so I assume it will happen, probably at the start of next month.
Just giving everyone a heads-up about why my name will be changing today and an explanation of the continued decrease of visible activity. I still would like to be part of the site administration behind the scenes, if everyone is okay with that.

GuestCongrats on the new job and for being able to spend more time with family. On the subject of masking your identity…
Do you think that changing your user name will be enough, or are you concerned with other ways your Curt user name (and even Ray user name in older posts) might show up where someone quotes you?
I’m not sure what phpbb does when someone quotes you and it’s a link, like below:

Whether the user name in the quote automatically changes if the user changes. The quote above can serve as an experiment. We’ll see if the name changes when you change your user name.
I’m certain phpbb won’t automatically change the quoted user for non-linked quotes like below:

So then the question becomes whether you’d like me to investigate scrubbing the database directly and attempting to change all instances of Curt and Ray to whatever your new name ends up being.

GuestThe last time I changed it, I had searched my username and systematically changed the instances where I was quoted. It was laborious – and I probably stopped after going back a few years. If you can change them in a far less time-consuming way, that would be great. If not, I can do it again.

GuestUsername is changed to a tongue-in-cheek reference to my length of time here – and a recognition of my comparative age.

GuestIt looks like the quoted stuff doesn’t update at all. I’ll look into doing an automatic replacing. In the history of phpbb I’m sure it’s been done in the past.

GuestI just replaced all the instances of ‘Curt Sunshine’ with ‘Old Timer’ (sorry, forgot the dash). That took care of 799 instances. Replacing all instances of just ‘Curt’ is a little too risky. The method would blast away any instance of ‘curt’ like: “The temple has curtains” would become “The temple has Old-Timerains” probably that too, but that’s beside the point.

GuestThanks! I did a quick search and fixed the few I found that were left.

GuestGood luck Old Timer! I support you in your life goals. We all have lives outside of our internet personas. May you find maximum joy and fulfillment in yours!

GuestCongrats on your new position. My daughter spent some time doing crisis work and it can be stressful, but so can prison. And the upside of spending more time with your wife is a great offset. The church seems to be increasing its footprint in counseling services the past couple years. Locally, the previous closest church employed counselor was in NYC (4 hours away and how does one go there for services?) – now they have one in Syracuse who actually comes to our stake weekly. Is it that kind of position? April 4, 2021 at 4:25 pm #341155Anonymous
GuestYes. It is a part-time position counseling members and counseling with leaders. July 17, 2021 at 9:08 pm #341162Anonymous
GuestI finally have been offered and accepted the part-time position with LDS Family Services. I will start around the beginning of next month. I will be the primary mental health counselor for the Dakotas, meeting with people in a small office in town or via telehealth. I should be approved soon to take the national licensing exam the state uses for its top-level license. If I pass the exam, I will be able to see private clients, as well, and bill on my own.

No, thanks, I would like about a decade of experience before I tackle that.

GuestThat’s great news Ray. I’m sure there are people you can help. My daughter just became licensed and works at UVU. She has no interest in working for the church, but it does open lots of doors for her (as it will for you). She does like what she does at UVU in part because she doesn’t have to repeat the party line and can offer real psychological help to those who struggle and or have been harmed by church teachings (or more correctly their dogmatic families). That said, she is planning to leave UVU in the not-to-distant future but that is more to get out of Utah than any problem she has at UVU.
