Roy & DJ, thanks for keeping the fort down in my relative absence.

I just wanted to call attention to this new user LCWalker. Not that they’ve come close to saying anything controversial, but this was their justification text for joining:

    Quote:

Im actually a former Mormon who left the church officially. I am concerned though that people leave over things that just seem unjustifiable and frankly the wrong reasons.

I’m a little concerned that they may eventually go down the path of telling people they’re wrong about things.

Thanks. I had noted that as well and just thought I’d keep an eye. One relatively benign comment so far.

Thanks for the heads up. I will keep on it.

It took a couple months but it appears he’s now looking to do what he originally said. I think I only noticed that because I’m a moderator and have seen his justification, I don’t think the general members necessarily interpret what he said the same way (and that’s fine). I think your response was good Nibbler and hopefully he hears you. So as I’ve thought about his post a bit and in the context of his justification I really don’t understand his point of view. Leaving for the wrong reasons, coming from somebody who left? I’m interested to see if he chimes back in, hopefully appropriately.

I don’t know if they’re planning on going in this direction but the concern is that they’re only asking people for the main reasons why people leave the church so they can reply with what’s wrong about each reason. I know this is StayLDS, but that doesn’t seem productive.

Ironically being told you’re wrong for feeling a certain way or for arriving at a different conclusion is probably one of the reasons people ultimately leave.

Their last comment in the post focuses on doctrine as a reason to leave. I think they are trying to start a critique of specific doctrines, so I pointed them to our archives.

We’ll see if/how they respond. I am a bit concerned but not alarmed yet.

Their new post is informational only – with a question about why. My response was short and direct – maybe overly so, but my antennae are up with them, so I wanted to see how they respond.

I do get the feeling they are trying to “controversy surf” – with no connection to our mission, especially since they don’t appear to be engaged at all with or in the church or trying to disengage gently or with care.

I agree Ray, they may be trying to troll or “stir the pot” by bringing up controversial topics which have little to no bearing on us. There are forums out there where that kind of stuff is welcome, I think we need to continue to discourage it.
