The 2nd Article of Faith says we aren’t punished for Adam’s transgression, which I see as the things we inherit through birth – which, biologically, includes pretty much everything except our spirits. In that construct, the only thing that matters is our effort – and even that is influenced by our mortal inheritance far more than we tend to realize.

I believe human culture and biology get in the way of our theology regularly – and that our core theology is astonishingly expansive and gracious. It rivals Buddhism in its universality and emphasis on having all eternity to progress to our ultimate state. I can’t see that, and I can’t say I know it, but it is the core of my faith (the things for which I hope but can’t see).

I think that is a collection of beautiful and thought-provoking thoughts.

Our theology is also expansive in the sense that we don’t blame anyone (especially women) for “Eve’s transgression”. I think this gets taken for granted in our culture more often then the beautiful, liberating concept it is. It is easy to “punish someone” to separate from “a sinner” – to condescend towards Eve and see her actions as a “mistake”. Our theology rests on the “moral of Eve” being “fidelity (Adam’s example)”, “radical acceptance (from Eve)”, and “equality (in the sense that Adam and Eve were both “sinners”, not that Eve “sinned more”).

    Absolutely, Amy.

The new version of this in the temple (and the new overall depiction of Adam and Eve) is terrific.
