    The Church has announced a new Seminary curriculum starting this fall that includes lots of practical life skills, including material about emotional resilience. It addresses common mental health issues and skills to help manage them. From a friend in the field, it is not meant to take the place of professional counseling but, rather, to normalize mental health issues, remove the cultural stigma, and provide skills for mild-moderate symptoms that don’t require professional counseling.

    I am extremely happy to hear about this change, especially the effort to remove the stigma of mental health issues and provide basic life skills.

    I applaud this move.

    I personally have felt that the vast majority of our church lessons and meetings are designed to bolster belief in the church as an organization. If there could even be secondary things that were taught in these meetings then the calculus of “to attend or not attend” could have more in the positive column.

    I think this will be a positive change.

    I agree with Roy that the majority of what’s put out in the church is intended to get people to believe in the organization more. Having something like this, something that teaches how to deal with life’s difficulties with a scriptural perspective, is a welcome thing.

    I know I get up on that soap box often.

    It’s good to hear the curriculum is changing in that way. Not only for the positive change but it’s also evidence of recognition of members’ needs. If needs are being recognized they have a chance at being addressed.
