Just fell into listening to old music from when I was a missionary. We were allowed to listen to:

    Afterglow

    Bryce Neubert

    Kenneth Cope

I scoured the internet for available music from these people since I no longer have the cassette tapes of their music I used to listen to. I’m sad that the original releases aren’t available — mostly greatest hits and collections now.

Found Afterglow and Bryce Neubert from the late 80’s when I was a FT missionary and ordered about $50 worth of music, including songbooks since I’m a musician.

I just want to share how much the music touches me, reminds me of the naivete of when I was a true believing Mormon, and how it makes me nostaligic of that era.

How about you, do you have any favorite LDS musicians from any era? Do you still listen to them? How do they make you feel?

Does it have to be LDS?

Britt Nicole is one that I still listen to sometimes.

    Lindsey Sterling is amazing.

If we count those who have left, the number is too large.

Not sure if I know what you mean by the part in bold — can you elaborate Old Timer?

The Church lost too many artists in my lifetime – people who have left for various reasons. The Fine Arts can bring a connectedness to marginalized people, particularly with regard to people who are LGBTQ+, and I personally know multiple people who no longer are active due largely to the tension in the Church regarding how they and those they love have been treated over the years.

I see progress in that area, and I hope we continue to find the ability to accept and be more compassionate in this area – and I believe deeply it is possible within our overall theology.

I see. I was searching Desert Book for contemporary LDS artists even if they were singing about church-related concepts. I could barely find anything but hymns. In the late eighties and early nineties we had a strong contingent of LDS artists like Aftgerglow, Janice Kapp Perry, Bryce Neubert, Kenneth Cope, Lex De Azevido and Michael McLean. Back then I was proud of the uplifting pop, and more spiritual music these artists created. Not sure why we aren’t encouraging artists like these in modern times. It’s sad….unless I’m missing people who fit the bill…

My theory is that the more pervasive “Christian music” movement was what replaced it in terms of music. “Mercy Me” and “Britt Nicole” are ones I would consider worth paying attention to. Also, “Anthem Lights” is awesome.

I am also curious about whether those who were musically inclined were the “canaries in the coal mine” who drifted away earlier/easier/more obviously. I have nothing to test my theory on obviously – but it’s worth thinking through and researching eventually.

David Archuleta recently released a song about his mother’s acceptance of him in coming out as queer (I’m not quite sure what specifically this word means, it appears to cover gay but also maybe more. I have heard David use it to describe himself multiple times so that is the word I’ll use in an effort to honor his self-description until I hear differently) and also that she would leave the church with him.

His mother reportedly said that they would go to hell together. It reminds me of the Robin Williams film “What Dreams May Come.”

We have “regularly scheduled programming”? :)

I know I cycle back to a few themes consistently as I process my stuff and get my faith transition butt handed back to me, but things are getting getting better on the family life front, the faith transition front has completed most of the transitions (for now), and if I were Jewish, I would start trash-talking my life to fend off thunderbolts and lighting strikes:)
