I have a question about prayer.

I pray regularly, with an emphasis on giving thanks. Occasionally I pray for something I need, but not too often.

    1. A couple times in my lifetime, I have prayed for something and for some reason, FELT heard. It was like my words actually got through the barrier between myself and God so He heard me. It’s a feeling like my words actually mattered and had an effect elsewhere. Almost the same sensation you feel when you are in front of a crowd and they are listening with deep interest to what you say. And then, later, the thing I prayed for appeared to come to pass.

    2. There was one time I was really hurting about the way I’d been treated by LDS Social Services. The treatment threw my commitment to our Ward and the Mormon way out of whack. I was watching a movie and felt MOVED to pray. It was ALMOST as if I didn’t have control of my body and simply got up and whisked myself away to our bedroom where I could pray in privacy.

I prayed, and in hindsight, was rather disrespectful, I feel, to God. I said, “OK, you moved me here to pray to you, so what do you want from me?” And I waited. I was then filled with waves of spiritual emotion, support, and encouragement not to turn my back on the gospel as I could “do a lot of good”. But when I got up, I still felt incredibly uncommitted. I can’t deny that it was a spiritually moving experience, but I still didn’t feel committed any more. I eventually did get back into the church, until the next thing came along to throw me off the path.

Have you have experienced either of these in prayer? The feeling that your words are actually being heard, and the feeling of being physically moved to pray, followed by a spiritual experience?

No, I haven’t. I think that is the lesson for me.

Each of us, pray, seek inspiration and receive answers to prayers in different ways.

It isn’t always like the “sacred grove”.

One time, I received my answer in a dream.

I have felt “connected” a few times.

I have felt “inspired” at times.

In a few blessings, I have spoken words I didn’t know to speak that the recipients said nobody knew.

    Those have been very rare.
