    Everyone:

For over 40 years I have written in a journal off and on.

I was wondering — a) do you keep a journal? If so, why?

    b) And what do you plan to do with your journal after you die (I know you can’t physically do anything with it after you die, but what are your plans for your journal, perhaps through instructions to others, or dealing with it when it’s clear your days are numbered?).

I have my missionary journals. I think it would be nice for my kids to include them in a sort of family history library along with my wife’s scapbooks and our photo albums.

I don’t keep a “formal” personal journal. I never have. And never will.

I do write & keep what I define as personal parables.

By this I mean, short stories or conversations that contain a spiritual message or lesson.

It is for my own edification. Anyone else that reads them probably won’t appreciate or understand

    why I wrote them down.

I do not keep a journal and have no desire or inclination to do so. Some people find personal satisfaction in doing so, and for some it’s therapeutic. None of that is true for me.

As a side note, and I have this on very good authority, GAs sign an agreement that they will not publicly share nor publish the contents of their personal journals and they’re actually discouraged from keeping journals. For the Q15 this may even include surrendering them to the church upon their deaths. I believe this is a protection measure for the church. I get that their cases are different because they are policy makers and “prophets, seers, and revelators” and some of their personal beliefs and experiences may not match the church rhetoric.

I’ve had a journal for years, mostly to help me work through thoughts or just keep track of memories. It’s not something I write in every day, but it definitely helps clear my mind when I need it. As for what happens to it, I’ve thought about that a few times. I guess I’d want to leave some instructions about it—maybe to keep it or throw it out, depending on what’s inside. I wouldn’t want anyone reading too much personal stuff, so it’s something I’d probably think about more as I get older.

It’s mostly just a way to vent and process stuff, you know? Keeps my head clear.

I am not a big “personal journal” person and yet…

  • I have a ton of Google Docs with writings that I started. Some of them make it out into the world for blogs.

  • Sometimes I write to my therapist because I am really writing to myself and using my therapist as a sounding board/excuse to put fingers to keyboard 😆

  • I take pictures knowing “I want to remember this” is the sole reason I am doing so.
