GuestAs I mentioned before, my Wife & I have moved into a new ward. We were called to a new calling (together) in the Primary.
It has been many years since I served in the Primary.
We were told that there is training online that we had to take & our participation would be monitored.
(I assume they can do it electronically.)
My question is: Is that true? Or, did I miss understand?
They didn’t say what the training material we were expected to take. Only that it was on the Church web site.
I think I’ve found it. After doing a quick review, it seems like it was put out there to fulfill some legal
requirement or legal oversight.
I’m just curious.

GuestAbout 6 years or so ago, there became a policy emphasis on Primary teacher training. Whether it’s a legal thing or just a way to protect children through training, I don’t know. I think that it came out after the Sam Young stuff broke, and there had been a record level of abuse cases coming to light.
I vaguely remember taking the training (2018 ish) mostly because I was trying to support the Primary organization for my kids (9 and up to 2 at the time).
I have mixed emotions about how the system works. The training itself is a more sanitized examination of the “reporting and removal” slippery slope. Our system for supporting abuse survivors is not robust enough to handle the 1 in 4-6 women, 1 in 7-10 men, and countless numbers of children (when you include children being abused by other children in the home) in abusive circumstances. This also doesn’t include that for some individuals with different mental capabilities, abuse is part and parcel of the caregiving landscape (dementia is a common example).

GuestI’m not sure whether it’s the same training I took several years ago, I forget when it started up but it was pre-covid. The training consisted of a series of situations and was animated (cartoon). I remember it also counseling leaders to contact church authorities instead of the police when there was something to report. If I’m remembering correctly, that counsel was only for the bishop and stake presidents. Counsel for everyone else was to contact the police. Minyan Man wrote:

When you complete the training you get a checkbox on your membership record that indicates you’ve taken the course. An individual marking the course complete is on the honor system and wards are also on the honor system of enforcing the policy to not extend callings to youth to people that aren’t current on the training.
It’s also not a one and done. People have to retake the training every few years.

GuestReiterating what Nibbler said, yes, there is a training for all people who work with children and youth. The bishop gets a report when it’s completed and you’re technically not allowed to actually serve until it’s done (there’s a short grace period). The training is also for all adult ward and stake leaders (SP, EQP, RSP, etc.). I did take it once (it has to be repeated every so often if still in a calling that requires it). It’s fairly short and not as in depth as the kinds of similar trainings I had as a mandated reporter, but hits on the main points (it’s more similar to the Scout trainings that were required of Scout leaders). It’s purpose is to protect youth (and the church, of course). The church link is here, with answers to questions:

GuestThanks everyone for your information. DJ thanks especially for the training link. It wasn’t the link I thought it was.
