GuestHeard today that the 116 pages of the Book of Mormon lost by Joseph Smith have recently been found, and that the church is going to publish them. Thomas S. Monson will read from some of them at General Conference. The church wanted this to be a GC surprise, but it leaked out early. April 1, 2011 at 2:07 pm #241874Anonymous

Good question. Even better in substance and impact than “My father lived in a tent”!
If this is true, the Church better REALLY do it’s homework on whether these are authentic…remember the Salamander letters? That whole scandal had me wondering if even the original brass or gold plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated could be fake too. Is it possible that Mark Hoffmans existed back in the time of Nephi and Alma? We have no way of testing the brass and gold plates, however, to see if they are authentic, but if a modern day prophet like GBH could be fooled with the salamander letters, could a prophet in times old be fooled by fake metal plates too, and include them in the set of plates used to teach posterity?
It’s a good thing I like the BoM for its ideas and don’t feel overly concerned about the truth of its origins, or stuff like this could be a real stumbling block if the Church accepts old scripture or letters as authentic, when in fact they are not.
Now you’ve got me wanting to read all about the salamander letters again to figure out how the truth came to light at that time. I’ve forgotten.

GuestI kind of fell for it too. In other news, I suggest that jwald take cwald away for the weekend. I’m not sure I can handle another meltdown.

That’s no damn lie. I;m not sure I could either.
Probably a good idea to just go fishing or something. I actually have some drywall I need finish it up.
So Doug, I’m not kidding you. I’m at baseball practice last night, visiting with the other Asst. Coach who is our HC. I’m telling him that I probably WILL NOT watch conference this weekend, because it ticked me off so bad last fall. It went from the April CG being one the best in my lifetime, to the October CG being the absolute worst of my lifetime. He kind of berates me a little bit and says that he loves GC and never complains or has a problem with the talks, and that it would be bad idea for me to skip it. Well, after visiting for a few minutes he says something like, “yeah I was doing something or another, and missed Fall conference this last time, and I still haven’t read all the way through the ensign edition.”
I just d@mn neart came out of my shell. I really did. I said something like, “well no sh*%# you didn’t have a problem with conference. You didn’t watch it! – you missed it, and all this time I have been griping to you about it, you don’t even know what I’m talking about.”
I probably shouldn’t have used that language to my HC – but come on.
Fortunately life goes on.

You keep letting stuff like that slip, and one of these days old Tom is going to ask Uncle Jim who you are.

Layers, Tom, layers. And he wouldn’t know me by that name anyway. And this points out that I can’t be Pres. Uchtdorf either, since he didn’t visit your Uncle Jim’s house in Mesa back in the 70’s. At least, *I* never saw him there!

Exactly. Even if nobody else has that much a clue, I sure do!
That would be highly unlikely.
