GuestI was reading 2nd Nephi Chapter 26 last week and came upon verse 31. Here it goes: “But the laborer in Zion shall labor for Zion; for if they labor for money they shall perish.” I know it’s not saying the Lord doesn’t want us earning money through work. Is he saying not to be materialistic? What are your thoughts on this? November 19, 2012 at 12:53 pm #261747Anonymous
GuestTo me, this means full time missionaries should not be paid. On a broader scale, I question whether it is right to charge people for the “word of God” or writings that are primarily to bring people to Christ. I don’t buy those kinds of books partly for that reason. The gospel should be honey for free and milk without price, right? November 19, 2012 at 4:22 pm #261748Anonymous
GuestI think it means that at the time the bom was “translated ” JS felt like preachers shouldn’t be paid. I don’t take it any deeper than that. November 19, 2012 at 5:15 pm #261746Anonymous
GuestI think it means that those who provide service to others in the effort to create and maintain Zion shouldn’t be paid for that type of service. Local leaders fit into that paradigm, but I like to look at it a little more expansively than that. November 19, 2012 at 8:01 pm #261749Anonymous
GuestGood points so far. I could agree with them. November 20, 2012 at 4:23 am #261750Anonymous

Slightly off-topic, but I’ve started using transcribed or published. It means I don’t to use the word translated, and allows me to avoid any perceptions of cynicism (or inverted commas in my tone of voice) when in certain company.

GuestAnd to answer the actual question, I’d agree with the others here. I think it’s saying that when labouring in Zion (ward calling, FT missionaries etc) we should not be paid for it. Having said that, is a CES employee labouring in Zion… ?
