I understand the irony of a BYU group covering a song that was written for those who are struggling to come out of the closet, but the message is wonderful with regard to all who struggle to be different and not ashamed of their differences.

Brave” – covered by Vocal Point

I love Vocal Point. I don’t see the irony, though. OK, maybe a little. My Daughter graduated last year from BYU and drew my attention to this:

While BYU is toeing the church line of chastity (which I don’t disagree with BTW), there is indeed a vibrant gay community there. My daughter isn’t gay but she is a quasi-feminist and she’s always ready to take up a cause. She was quite involved in this one and as a result has several gay BYU student friends. They’re there, open, and officially accepted (although I’m sure there is some discrimination by unenlightened individuals).

And, of course, as you said, this can song apply to any of us.

I know there is an open, thriving gay population at BYU, and I am positive the Fine Arts programs are even more aware of the issues than some other departments. I am quite optimistic about things with the younger generations, even as I understand fully that we still have a long, long way to go even with many of them (especially from some areas of Mormon demographic domination).

Anyway, I love this version of this song – and I love the message of the song.
