So this is one of those strange years where Easter and General Conference collide. Raised a Protestant, I was use to attending a local church on Easter. The special music, the flowers, the sermons on the highest hope of Christendom (our belief in eternal life). I will have Conference on, but it’s not quite the same, without the new outfits and the little girl’s pretty hats.

So I’m driving past our ward building earlier this week. We have a huge mega church across the street. They are a different ethic group than what makes up 99 percent of our Mormon congregation. Their followers always have to park along the busy highway. They have a huge parking lot, but it fills early. Two years ago two elderly sisters were struck and killed when they parked on the roadway for their Christmas eve program. Suddenly I knew I had to call the bishop. I suggested he call their church office and volunteer our parking lot for their Easter overflow. We would certainly be thanked from their pulpit, our community would learn of it, and it might answer the obvious question, “Where are the Mormons on Easter morning?” (in a special conference).

The bishop said little. He did like and acknowledge the idea. I figure he needs to move the question up the ladder. So this Sunday we will see if my seed sprouted. Any bets? I’ll answer after Easter.

Awesome idea! I hope the Bishop makes the necessary phone calls to make it happen.

Great job on being observant enough to the needs of others to have this inspired idea!

    What a wonderful inspiration!

FWIW, we allow our parking lot to be used by the community center next door and they, in turn, shovel our lot. (I think that is what I heard) Anyway, it comes in handy for swim meets.

We also allowed our stake center parking lot to be used by the country club across the street for a big event they held. They even shuttled people from our lot to their place!

It shouldn’t have to go too high to get this put into action. I think the SP can pass off on it. Great idea!

It doesn’t have to be taken up the ladder. Those decisions can be made at the stake level – and, really, at the ward level. There might be a Stake President out there who would veto such an idea, but I can’t fathom why.

The stake center where we lived in Ohio is near a Jewish synagogue. They let us use their lot for Stake Conference overflow, and we let them use ours for special events. We have a great relationship, and they even attend the Christmas nativity display and concerts on a regular basis.

Awesome awareness, George! Great example for us all.

Just an update to the “golden opportunity.” I drove by our ward parking lot around noon. Not a car to be seen. The Protestant church’s lots were filled, with cars lined along the highway for two blocks. Ever see a lady dressed nicely for church in high heels, with a baby & toddler, walking two blocks to Easter services? We lost an opportunity (maybe the idea got shot down, I can’t say). Bummer.

PS: The twelve noon service was the second of the day for the mega-church.

George, if it did get shot down, I wonder which party shot it down. Could have been either one, but, in my experience, Mormons would tend to allow others to use their lot while MANY other Christians wouldn’t dream of parking in a cult’s lot.

    I don’t know, but I wonder.

There also might not have been enough time for the pastor’s to pass the word on to the congregation. It would have needed to be announced last Sunday in their meeting, I would think.

Maybe next year! Well, depending on when Easter hits… :?
