I immediately thought of everyone here when I read it.
How do you reconcile this with the oft-quoted statement from leaders that what they want you to do is something the Lord wants you to do? That they are inspired to say so, etcetera? Personal opinions of different people – and, if I know them really well and can be blunt, a quick review of Lucifer’s plan and the need to follow the dictates of our own consciences. 
See how easy that was?
Leaders that are after you to “follow the prophet” generally mean to do what they say. Thanks for your post, Ray. It’s amazing how one person in your youth can make such a difference. Reminded me of the teacher who did that for me. I’ve read two of Bro. Bennion’s books regarding how to square intellectual learning with spiritual belief – or rather how to live a rich multifaceted life with each discipline claiming those parts that pertain to them. I believe that the context of this insight would be towards living simply (frugally) and not being controlled by the fads or latest trends. I’m sure that the concepts of personal revelation and “individual adaptation” were not foreign to Bro. Bennion. However, if that was the context surrounding this quote I believe he would have chosen other wording than, “refuse to be controlled!”
