Part of me thinks it would be great to have a Mormon in the White House. Another part of me doesn’t want it because of all the bad press the church gets. People are super nit-picky (the new Baptisms for the dead thread). Oh here we go again. Stupid members are violating church policy to make Mormons “look bad.”

I know a lot of members who want Ron Paul, and others who want Santorum because they cannot forgive Romney for flip-flopping on Abortion, or gay marriage. I don’t think we should base our vote on our Religion, but sometimes I think it is very hard to not to.

I know we don’t want a heated political discussion on here, that’s why I just wanted to keep it along these lines. How would anything be different if a Mormon is President of the USA. Does it matter? Would it improve things, or would it just continue the stalemate we already have in politics? Would there be a backlash against Mormons? I wasn’t alive when JFK was President, so I don’t know if it really mattered that he was Catholic although the Kennedy-Shriver legacy has had a great impact on Special Education in this country, and for that I am grateful for the Catholic view on the sanctity of life that was obviously part of JFK’s influence on those citizens with special needs. I believe Kennedy had a sister or niece that had Down’s or Mental Retardation. Back in the day they would just send those with special needs away in a sanitarium without much interference from families. Now families get government assistance to help them take care of there families.

I’m just curious. Since we are members of the Church who like to speak our minds. I was just curious what the forum thought about this topic.

For me, the easy answer is: it depends on the Mormon.

Mitt Romney vs Boyd K. Packer.

    Mike from Milton.

I don’t think religion is a major factor to consider in determining the best person for office, but I do think character counts for something and all facets of the person’s personal life are factors in that. At the end of the day, his record on policy and leadership and getting things done is more important, but it helps me know more about Romney when I know his religion.

It actually helps me like him better knowing his stance on abortion because he is politicking, not just representing a church position. I wouldn’t vote for a devout Mormon who won’t have his own thoughts while in office.

The one benefit can come from people seeing a Mormon in office is that they can begin to see him as anormal person, to dispell many of the hyped up fears people who are ignorant tout.

Many evangelicals have expressed quite openly that their biggest concern about the possibility of having a Mormon POTUS is that it would “legitimize” the LDS Church and Mormonism – especially if that POTUS was reasonably successful and well-liked.

I think there is a lot of truth to that concern – but I also think the opposite would be true if a Mormon POTUS made a really stupid decision or if there were bad things that happened outside his control that would be blamed on him.

So, it’s a toss-up, imo – but I still would like to see it and take the chance (especially if it was Huntsman).
