There is a new post in the General area entitled:

Having your calling and “inflection” made sure

Have a read if you guys wouldn’t mind. I don’t see it as a particularly big deal, but Tom Haws seems to think so. I’ve seen others use mild swear words on this site and it hasn’t caused a stir before. I suppose the thread isn’t a particularly interesting topic in terms of the church, but it is in the general section.

I didn’t think it was so bad. I think the stuffy/corporate culture thing is a “stumbling block” for many people. I thought Tom was going to the mattresses for nothing. Maybe not nothing, but mountain out of a molehill anyway.

    I responded to the post.

I am going to say it is not a violation of the rules of etiquette covering profanity because it was not said in anger. The only word was “damn,” and it was used in a clinical type of context to make a point about language.

I don’t think we should permit any words banned on public broadcast television, regardless of the usage: f-word, s-word, etc.

Tom Haws is very sensitive to curse words and anything that hints of sexuality. I personally like him, but his level of sensitivity is too high for the community. We’ve had a couple other issues like this with him. Some we changed. Some … he has to adapt to the realities of the community here.

Amen, valoel. One of my pet peeves is language restrictions that don’t allow the use of words in their proper context. I even used “the s-word” in a comment where I was referring to manure / excrement / whatever other high-brow word one can use to mean the same stuff.

It didn’t occur to me Tom objected based on language. JMB – Tom requested I change my previous “sexy” avatar. That’s one thing Ray & Valoel are referencing.

Ah, I see. Well, dang, I feel left out. Where’s said avatar? Shoot me an email, I’d love to see it!

It’s the one I use at NOM. You’ll be disappointed–it’s not that sexy IMO!

Well, it fits your username a bit better. I guess some of us are more sensitive than others to that type of thing.

I don’t want to poke fun at Tom too much ;) , but his complaint was that avatar portrayed cleavage … 😯 and he was serious about it.

I kind of feel for Tom on that one because at the time he said his wife and/or employer would freak out if she/they saw him on sites where someone dressed like my avatar was posting. But now it sounds as though he is separated and on the road to divorce.

I don’t quite understand Tom. Is there a post in which he discussed his divorce/separation or something? I have looked for it but haven’t seen one. He sent me a PM about 3 weeks ago asking if he could call me and talk to me. I said yes and gave him my phone number but he never called. Not sure what to make of it. I want to help him, although I recognize he and I have very different views.

Fwiw, I see Tom as someone who has lived a VERY complex life – and that’s probably all I can say without going off the deep end of speculation and risk making judgments that aren’t mine to make. I really feel for him and his personal demons – and I really admire the effort he seems to be making to find peace.
