I struggel with this too. The thing that bugs me is that I am treated as guilty. “They” all walk around piously. Its exactly like someone being tried for a crime who cant ever give any evidence in their own favour. It annoys me that these people judge me, but I cant (out of my compassion for them) tell them the truth, yet they judge me with no compassion. Will this feeling ever go away. Will I ever fully get over the injustice of it all!

I hope so! If you get over it first.. you have to promise to tell me how you did it!

I’d love to say that the judgemental looks don’t bother me.. or that saying screw you under my breath undid the hurt of the little comments I get, but they still sting!
Sometimes I really wonder why I still put myself through this, then I’ll attend a great church meeting where I feel so loved and wanted.. but usually I return the next week or a couple weeks later and feel just the opposite.
Sorry, I’m really at a loss for an answer to that one!

GuestPatience and losing unrealistic expectations. I wish that was as easy to reach as it is to preach.

This made me think of the term the “Tyranny of the THEY” from James Fowler’s Stages of Faith. “They” only have power and authority that we give “Them.” Like Ray said, it is easier to preach than to reach, but the solution is to transition your image of power and ultimate authority from your community and your public leaders to you as an individual. When we transition our self into the role as ultimate authority (or also God directly through us via personal revelation), then we overcome this tyranny and frustration.
You know they are wrong (all-or-nothing, 100% correct no matter what, etc.). But you still feel their authority. We all do really at times, even people who manage to drift past this trap of faith development. None of us are 100% there or 100% not
I actually kind of enjoy the pain of it at times. It gets me all riled up and thinking. What if I am wrong? Maybe I *AM* in the jaws of Satan’s trap. It’s good to always doubt a little and go through self examination. It’s healthy to be challenged by this system of the “Tyranny of the They.”

Thank you for expressing this!
