GuestDo you think all three vacancies will be filled at this conference? September 26, 2015 at 10:36 pm #304359Anonymous
GuestThanks, DJ. That is how I would expect it to happen, given my years of experience with how councils and understanding of how they are supposed to work.
Personally, I do think all three will be filled immediately. I think they will want to avoid all the speculation that would occur over an extended period of time otherwise.

GuestWe have a local guy who made a lot of money in business. He retired young and then served as a mission president. He comes from an LDS family that is very well connected within the church. Almost too well connected — because they work their connections constantly. He and his wife suddenly put the family home on the market 2 weeks ago. They haven’t said where they are going or what is next. Just crickets. It has been so quiet that it is almost its own statement. I’m curious to see if his name comes up next weekend.

As DJ mentioned, it could be Saturday morning or afternoon, with no clear precedent. I will note though, that each of the last five called to the Q12 have spoken for the first time as Apostles in the Sunday Morning Session. That includes when DFU and DAB were both called. With three, I think it’s possible that the third one called will speak in the Sunday Afternoon Session, rather than all in the same session, but it seems certain that at least two of the new Apostles will speak Sunday morning.September 28, 2015 at 6:46 pm #304362Anonymous
GuestHow long do you suppose the new Apostles are called before the announcement? Are they sworn to secrecy before the announcement? Even from family? September 28, 2015 at 8:10 pm #304363Anonymous

It is not secret who the new apostles will be, it is sacred!
This secrecy about callings is so childish at all levels. I remember once a friend from the ward was called as a counselor into the SP. The Sunday morning of conference he was suppose to ride with another friend to the Stake Center, but he made up some dumb lie about having to drive himself. Lets just say he was not honest in his dealings with his fellow man………

GuestWhich really has me wondering about the duration. I can imagine not telling anyone for a week or two but if I was asked to keep the secret for months it would get harder. September 28, 2015 at 10:48 pm #304365Anonymous
GuestThey generally are told very shortly before conference. Frankly, I like that, since they would be bombarded by people if the word went out before conference. They wouldn’t be able to function in their normal lives unless they ignored everyone and lived like monks.

GuestIf it were me I’d announce the new apostles during the Saturday afternoon session. I’ve heard lots of “conference weekend isn’t a weekend to take a break” grumblings so what better way to get people to watch at least two sessions of conference? Everyone tunes in Saturday morning to see who the new apostles are going to be. No announcement. Then people have to come back for the Saturday afternoon session to find out.

My son has a soccer game at the same time as the Saturday “morning” session of conference (it’s noon on the east coast). I do have the ability (and the data plan) to stream the session on my phone and I may do the first few minutes just to see if the business is conducted. Otherwise social media will explode with the news, and it won’t take long for Deseret News, KSL, etc., to post it. I’m pretty confident that if it’s done Saturday morning I’ll know before “afternoon” (in Utah). Since the game is an hour and a half drive from home, it is also quite possible I’ll miss the beginning of the next session as well, and could use the same trick. On the other hand, I may not check just because I don’t want to be disappointed by choices I may not like. In either case, there are more important things than conference going on for some people.
I will “keep the Sabbath” by having both Sunday sessions on, but I do tend to doze during the last session which occurs during my normal Sunday nap time (and it tends to induce naps anyway). I’ll also check in here for recommended/not recommended talks. The highlight of the day Sunday (besides sleeping in and the nap) is our traditional brunch.

DAB said when he first spoke as an Apostle that the interview had been Friday afternoon.QLC said the call came “late Thursday afternoon”.
As for the secrecy, DFU mentioned talking to his wife about it just after the interview with GBH.

GuestNo need to tune in just for that. Twitter! September 30, 2015 at 5:22 pm #304370Anonymous
GuestAlso, a procedural tidbit: When DTC was announced, he was sitting with the Presidency of the Seventy and the camera went to him when his name was read. When NLA was announced, he was already sitting with the Q12 and the camera went to him as it panned the Q12 and the names were read.
Going back to prior instances, it looks like both approaches have been used. My guess is that with two or three new Apostles, they will be seated with the others in order to avoid overheating the cameras.
